Shuffle questions in quiz

New Here ,
Feb 03, 2019 Feb 03, 2019

Hi. I have a 20 question quiz I’ve built. I only want 10 questions to display so I put in 10 random slides. To test,  I’ve failed the quiz once but on the second attempt I’m presented with those SAME 10 questions. In the same order. I want the quiz to go in and pull additional questions from the 20 for variety. It’s ok for some of the questions to be presented again but i would like to not have all of the same questions presented as they were on the first attempt. Please help!

This is just the way that Random Question slides work in Captivate.  If you want to see a different set from the Question Pool that these questions are attached to then you need to relaunch the module again.  The randomisation only takes place on launch.  After that the questions are set for that session.

Thank you. But we are required to give two attempts if someone scores less than 80 on attempt one. So essentially I would have to assign the quiz twice to get the desired shuffle outcome and remove the retake button I currently have?  Is there not a coding workaround on the back end behind the scends that I could “force” the shuffle?

Rod gave you the correct answer. You cano nly have a new subset when relaunching the course. I explained this more in detail and offer more tips/trics in this blog post:

You have to exit the course, and when relaunching you'll have a new subset of random actions. The LMS will have to take care of the attempts.

@rinmich - I think you may be confusing two different things.  The fact that randomisation of quiz question slides happens at launch of the module does NOT prevent you from giving the learner more than one attempt at the quiz.  You have actually three different levels where you can give multiple attempts:

  • As Lieve mentions, you can set the learner to be allowed multiple launches of the entire module from the LMS.  This is controlled by the LMS.
  • You can set multiple attempts at the quiz during a single launch session.  This is controlled via the Quiz Settings within Captivate.  You need to allow multiple attempts on the quiz and enable the Retake Quiz button.
  • Finally, you can give the learner multiple attempts on a single quiz slide by setting the number of attempts in the Quiz tab > Actions section.

Randomisation of the questions from a Quiz Pool is independent of these other settings.  What you need to remember is that if you are using randomisation you can never really guarantee that the learners are all going to be seeing the same quiz questions at any given time.

That’s correct. I understand that, but I was questioning randomizing  the questions only. based on what I’m hearing from you both, I can only guarantee the end user will see different questions on both attempts is to come out of the course and relaunch it.

if that is the fix then won’t I have to essentially set the exam for one attempt and reassign to the user to enable the second attempt’s shufe to guarantee they will see different questions.

The only  my reason I was asking about attempts is solely based on the response to “relaunch” the course. I’m trying to figure out how to do that.

thanks all.

If seeing different questions is your main consideration, then yes, you would need to force the learner to relaunch the module for their second attempt.

@RodWard Is this a limitation of Adobe Captivate or is this the case with all e-learning authoring tools?

It's certainly a limitation with Captivate.  I cannot speak for all other e-learning authoring tools on the planet.
