Hello! I am trying to create a timed slide where the user must correctly click on 7 smart shapes (as buttons) that reports to the quiz results. So far, I can't seem to get it to advance automatically after 30 seconds - it only advances when the user clicks "submit"
I've tried changing the active/inactive states of the smart shapes, I tried taking the submit button out altogether, I tried inserting a timer that would jump to the next slide on timeout - nothing has worked. I'm sure there is some setting I am missing, I am not particularly tech-savvy but have somehow wound up as our content creator.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Can you please post a screenshot of the timeline, the stage, and the advanced action that you use to have the slide continue? You have created that Submit button, for what reason and which command or action is triggered by that button?

The submit button is intended to allow the user to go to the next slide - ideally they would be able to move through faster than 30 seconds - so it is set to Go to Next Slide.
I don't have any advanced actions... I am pretty new to Captivate, and have never done anything even remotely like this before, I am not really sure how to utilize them correctly/effectively.
Basically, I am in way over my head here!
Here is a screenshot of the timeline, but there are too many things on the slide to get it to all show at once. I apologize in advance, this is looking like maybe I'm just not prepared to make the program do what my company would like it to do.

All the shape button are pausing the slide at 1,5secs. You talked about 7 shape buttons but the Timeline shows 21 shape buttons?
Why is that slide so long, it has no sense because I don't see slide audio.
I'm stil not sure what you really want? What are those 30secs?
You want them to click on each shape button (is there content in it, I see images above those shape buttons?) and what do those shape buttons do? Where is the submit button?
Can you please try to explain in words what you want to happen? Maybe you should read that sequence of 5 blog posts (first one is announced in top of these forums) about the Timeline. Only 3 have been published so far, fourth is on its way and talks more specificually about pauses.

I know this seems like kind of a mess, I really don't know what I'm doing... clearly,
I work in a casino, and this is intended for training purposes - basically there is an image that is the dealer's hand, with 7 player hands shown. Below each, we want the trainee to click a button whether the player's hand should win, lose, or push, hence the 21 smart shapes. Only 7 of them are correct, though, and need to score to the quiz.
We want them to have to answer all 7 in 30 seconds or less, which is why we would like to have the slide jump at that point. I tried having the buttons all active for 30 seconds so it wouldn't pause the slide, but it still didn't skip ahead.
Maybe this isn't even possible, no one in my company has much experience with any of this.

Yes, have created similar scenarios for clients, but as a newbie this is indeed way to complicated.
It has to be a combination of user variables, advanced/shared actions + the timer interaction for the time delay.
All your shape buttons pause the slide at 1,5secs, you can easily get back to the default duration of 3 seconds. Or you should have to take out the pausing for all the shape buttons. It is not a very good practice, but then the playhead would continue to the next slide after 30secs. And how will you store the given answers?

That makes me feel better, honestly, just flat out not having the knowledge makes me feel less ridiculous than if I was just missing a very simple step!
There is another component to the project that uses the included quiz slides, so when I have previewed the project without the timing component, the answers all report to the results page, which is awesome.
Thanks so much for your help, I feel pretty overwhelmed by all of this, especially since I am not a particularly tech-savvy individual. Any suggestions on how I can start to teach myself about the user variables and advanced actions? I've looked at them some but have yet to figure out how to adequately utilize them, which I know is holding me back.

Start by understanding the Timeline. These articles (also available in the eLearning portal) are a beginning (two more to come):
Captivate's Timeline(s) Demystified - Intro - Captivate blog
Video Demo Timeline demystified (cpvc-project) - Captivate blog not so essential for you now
Captivate's Timelines (master slide/normal slide cptx) demystified - Captivate blog
As for advanced actions, have plenty of articles, use cases on that same blog.
