Slides being skipped by clicking anywhere! on 2 yrs of courses! help!

Hello!

I'm a video guy building Professional Development scorm courses from large recorded live seminars. Got an issue from the client late last night that's impacting 2 years of work.

The issue simply put is wherever someone clicks EXCEPT the designed locations, the user is able to jump forward through the slides of synched video & timed ppt content. Some of our older courses are built in Cap 8 and are doing the opposite (jumping backwards when clicking anywhere). The designed location work flawlessly but this is a new behaviour and I'm terrified that I've missed the smallest setting over 40+ courses of content.

I've generated a template for approx 18-20 courses/year of roughly 3hr video content manually synched with its powerpoint slides. I'm only now seeing this issue on content from the last 2 years and we're about to head into our busy season for this year's production.

It's a beast. And our client's host provider needs it under 1.5gb per scorm, so I've done what I can to simplify everything in Captivate for sake of space.

It's a frame of two vertical bars, top & bottom, as smart shapes without button functionalities. I've used plain white to fill in my gaps and those are bottom level smart shapes also without button functionality (In hindsight I could've drawn the whole frame as a png and imported that, but these 40 courses are already built). Top right corner have accurately working "Prev" & "Next" buttons for quick jumping. Additionally, client didn't want the native TOC and so I've built out a custom one using a png, then overlayed rectangular smart shapes (and accurately setup as buttons) for detailed navigation.

The SlideVideo sits top left and is accurately synched to the 80-200 pngs (exported ppt slides). You can jump the timeline bar at the bottom and nothing breaks synch. Users have been rather satisfied to date, though we've identified this click-anywhere action across each course.

Each slide is set to 'Go To The Next Slide' On Exit to have the seamless seminar feel. No Action on Enter.

Only variable I can find is the host company migrated the entire scorm library this summer, (from their servers to the client's) and we caught some other minor functionalities of the course use were impacted (ie. couldn't download pdf materials from their module as before). We've had their support staff simulate a specific course and they can't seem to replicate it the way I seem to be able to (I'm presuming they're using IE11). Also going back to a few source cptx files and rendering as an html5 preview, I'm seeing this as an issue in Chrome & Safari both (I'm Mac-based).

I've racked my brain as I'm now seeing 2 years worth of hosted content having new issues! Please help!

Difficult to guess what is wrong. You don't need to set the On exit action to Go to Next slide, because that happens automatically when the last frame of a slide is reached, it goes to the next slide. Unless you have interactive objects on the slide that are pausing the slide? If the actions triggered by those objects skip frames (like the action Jump to slide) the last frame of the slide will never be visited and the On Exit event never happens. You talk about Prev and Next buttons, if those have a pausing point you are in that situation. Are the attempts set to Infinite? Because if they are limited, you have not only a Success event for those buttons but also a Failure event, which is happening when the user clicks outside of those buttons.

Oh my. Thank you!

After getting off a call with the LMS hosting service to rule out that this wasn't their issue, I dove deeper into the Prev/Next buttons as you suggested.

  • Replaced the Buttons with Shapes-enabled-as-Buttons
  • Removed those default pause points on the new Shapes
  • Eliminated the Infinite Attempts the way the Buttons were set
  • Then set Failures to 'Continue' (instead of also Prev slide or Next slide like before)
  • Then reset each On Exit to Do Nothing

-- only then did this issue resolve.

I had no idea that anything being clicked outside of a Button would yield such a catastrophic action across each slide. And to think no user (myself included) crossed it's path in 37 courses!

I have a ton of work ahead of me now, but huge thanks here again.

I'm sorry, why is there so few good Captivate training/books around? That is my answer...
