You probably have an interactive object that is pausing the timeline. Can you please show a screenshot of the Timeline?

Well, you are right. I have a next button and i can see the "pause" icon on the object in the timeline before the text shows. I dragged the pause to the end of the timeline and now it works. Thank you so much. I'm getting the hang of Captivate and it's slow going. I come from lectora and articulate. Thanks so much, again.

is there a way to default the pause where i want it without having to go to each object and carefully drag to end? timeline is much easier to work with that storyline (which is archaic compared to CP) but it's delicate work dragging each object to end to take up any space so it doesn't leave the screen. I have many pages with text.

The timeline is the 'core' of Captivate, try to get to grips with it ASAP. Here is an old blog post I wrote about the timeline:

Tiny Timeline Tidbits - Captivate blog

You have the timing properties panel with all information, including pause:

TimePause.png

You can change time of appearance, duration time, pausing time. Each number field can either be overwritten or you can use arrows to increase/decrease time by 0.1sec. If you use SHIFT-arrow you increase/decrease by 1 sec.
