Hi All,
I'm discovering Captivate and Trying the demo version
Sorry for this very basic question but the main toolbar with insert / themes / text / shapes... is not showing in my captivate 8 even when I select classic view?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Sighing.... the Help Documentation is hopeless, outdated totally. That main toolbar doesn't exist anymore, was there until CP7. It has been 'replaced' by that Big Button Toolbar on top of the screen that takes up a lot of real estate and cannot be moved nor customized. Some items are still in the Insert menu, but it has been stripped down a lot, you'll not find everything that can be inserted there neither. Just wanted to warn you. Only the pages about new features are really updated, but do not

Workspaces are gone, at least in Newbie User Interface. There is only Classic. You can switch to an Expert UI that allows you to create custom workspaces but perhaps that is too early.
I am just wondering why you are trying version 8 and not 9 which is the most recent version?

hi, I had the same question for Captivate 9. I came across this page looking for an answer via Google and didn't find one.
So, for posterity, here's what I learned from chatting with an Adobe chat helper:
For OSX:
Go to Applications > Captivate 9 > utils
then click on CleanPreferencesMac -- the Terminal app will open and run a shell script. The window doesn't close, so you do that manually, and then when you open Captivate 9, the main toolbar is there!
The steps for Windows may be similar (navigate to All Programs), but since I don't use Captivate 9 on a WinTel machine, I can't say for sure.

@GibWalls Your answer is not a solution to this question at all, which is about a vertical toolbox that doesn't exist anymore. Clearing the Preferences, a solution that has been posted many, many times on this forum, will only solve issues due to corruption of the Preferences, but can never restore a part of the UI that is no longer there.
As moderator I thought it fitting to post this comment on your answer. As for IWin users, they do not need All Programs, but can navigate to each folder using the Explorer. 'Utils' is a subfolder of the Captivate installation folder. Only drawback is that you need Administrator rights to have access to that folder and run the appropriate file. Alternative to clear Preferences is to delete the Adobe Captivate folder which stores the Prefereces in your user profile, which is accessible to you. More info here:

As another moderator on this forum, I would personally like to THANK GibWallis for participating in the Captivate Community and at least offering helpful advice that might benefit others. I hope you will continue to do so in future.
I'm sure Lilybiri would be the first to lament the fact that she spends SO much of her valuable time answering queries by other Captivate users. Given her many years of expertise with this application, and her very self-sacrificing spirit, it is only natural that she contributes many accurate answers herself.
However, it should be said that Forum Moderators also need to exercise restraint when it comes to intervening in these discussions. Otherwise some participants who might have been willing to contribute answers could refrain from doing so, for fear of being chided over any slight flaw in their information.
It's an imperfect world. Let's not let PERFECTION get in the way of GOOD.

Hi Rodward, thanks for the words of encouragement for contributing to these fora.
Rest assured, if I feel like I have something to contribute, I will jump in!
Lilybiri, the OP didn't ever refer to a vertical toolbar. Since the OP never wrote back to say that installing Captivate 9 solved his issue, I wonder why your suggestion is now marked as correct.
For me, using Captivate 9 and also missing the biggest and most visible toolbar, installing Captivate 9 over again didn't work. There was also no Captivate 10.
Your blog is a wonderful resource and I'm already consulting it, but your suggestion to install a new version didn't solve my situation which sounded identical to the OP's.
If I should have written a brand new query for Captivate 9 and called it the big, visible toolbar instead, please forgive me for not following this protocol -- posting the answer that worked for me seemed a way to consolidate issues into one thread.
But if my answer is really non-responsive to the OP's query, I will be happy to re-post my question with its answer so that it will not confuse future visitors with information you deem incorrect.
