Unable to jump back to original slide

New Here ,
Jun 02, 2019 Jun 02, 2019

Hi,

I have came across a strange situation where I am unable to jump back or move behind to a previous particular slide.

On my project, I have added a custom navigation bar on slide 3 which has Menu, CC, Volume, Play/Pause and Back-Next buttons set to continue playing for the rest of the project.

Now when i try to assign a button to jump back to slide 5 from slide 10, it is only going back to slide 9. I have tried Go to the slide last visited, Jump to slide <slide#>, also used advanced where i am checking if a particular variable value is 1 then it should jump back to the respective slide.

I tried to view the branching view to understand the linkage of the slides but the view does not show the complete navigation for all the slides.

I have around 50 slides, slides 6 to 8 i have hidden. Slides 13 to rest appears as unlinked although all of them have their previous and next buttons set to move back and ahead one slide.

Here's the quiz settings page.

I disabled the Branch Aware checkbox, since I needed the playbar on the skin to appear so that i can test the course. Any suggestion on what I can do to get back from a slide?

Thanks

Branching view panel is almost usless if you use custom navigation.

Branch aware and not allowing Backwards movement in Quiz could have been the cause, but that is fine. Do you perhaps have Pretest slides?

I have two ungraded MCQ slides whose answers I am not reporting in the quiz at slide 40 and slide 41. The graded quiz starts from slide 48.

Those are no pretest slides, that is fine.

I forgot to ask: how are you testing? If you use Preview, use only Preview HTML5 in Browser (F11) if your output will be to HTML5 which I suspect is the goal.  At least if this is a non-responsive project. Is that the case?

Yes, this is a non-responsive project.

Since I am making the custom playback controls appear for the rest of slide, the buttons were not appearing on the normal preview.

So I am publishing the entire course to HTML5 and then testing from the index_scorm file. Little longer route but trying to make sure all of the buttons are appearing properly. In case they are not appearing(for slides with different master slide) then I am adding them on top of the new slide.

Why do you say that the custom playback controls don't appear in Preview, that is not normal. If you mean 'for the rest of the PROJECT', of course you have to preview the whole project but that is the case with Preview in Browser and Preview HTML5 in Browser. Something seems to be awry with that project. In the majority of my projects I use custom navigation, either on the master slide or timed for the rest of the project.

You are testing published output locally, that could also be a problem. HTML5 output is meant to be tested after uploading. Another reason why I wanted to know if F11 Preview is leading to the same result.

Yes with HTML5 in Browser preview option its leading to the same result.

Here's a screenshot of the properties of the custom nav controls.

I have no idea where the glitch is occurring. Jump back to earlier slide is causing the issue whereas jump ahead is working properly.

You have an effect on the button! Missing detail. What type of effect? It will only happen on the first slide, I would never do that.

Apologies for the trimmed screen grab.

Maybe the following screenshot can help.

I have no effect or transitions on the slide. Mainly using the timeline panel to introduce new objects on the slide.

OK. I am out of ideas really. Do you have a TOC? If yes, do you allow navigation there?

I have a TOC. The forward navigation is blocked whereas backward navigation works.

I havent set that though.

On the quiz preferences I have selected

You did show me the Quiz settings before, checked them.

It is now more guessing. Try to give full navigation in TOC to see if this is helping.

I would also move the hidden slides (since it seems that jumping over them is the problem) to another location in the filmstrip, although I never did see a problem with hidden slides.

BTW which version do you use? On Windows or Mac?

I am on Captivate 2019 on a windows machine.

I tried with different set of slides and tried to navigate 2 or 3 slides back, didnt work.

About the full navigation in TOC, does that mean selecting all the individual slide title on the TOC pane. I have many simulation slides which do not have any names/ titles. I dont have them on right now.

For the TOC, just activate Self-paced learning and uncheck 'Navigate visited slides only'.

Check te full version number, please/ It is at this moment 11.0.1.266.

Yes I am on the version 11.0.1.266

If i uncheck navigate visited slides only, on the final output, wouldn't it provide the learners an option to traverse ahead to other slides?

I don't want people to proceed ahead, they can go back using the TOC.

Another thing I found out, even though the custom navigation controls are set to play for the rest of the project. I need to separately copy them on slides which have different master slide.

Also, on one of the slide, on slide entry, I am showing a back button and on a certain shape I am disabling the back button. This does not work at all.

Recreating the entire project from scratch will take alot of time, assuming i have corrupted the project, not sure what to do now.

I asked this for TESTING, still trying to find the origin of the problems.

From your last answer, I detect that there are some gaps in your CP skills, especially concerning master slides and themes.

Shape buttons meant to be displayed on all slides: put them on the main master slide. The daughter master slides can inherit from that main master slide. In the Themes packaged with Captivate only the Blank and the TItle master slides do not have that feature enabled.

If you need control over a shape button, you can time it for the rest of the project. It will have a unique ID and that can be used to Hide/Show with the On Enter event of slides. That works perfectly, my workflow in almost every project I create.  Start to fear that your project is messed up somehow.

Hi Lilybiri,

Rather than trying to fix the project. I redid the entire course and now its working.

Do you have any post on the custom navigation on the master slide?

Or something related to building within master slide. I would want to try and build on top of your suggestion.

Thank you so much for all the help.

I have several posts about master slides, about shape buttons, but not one specifically for custom navigation using master slides. Maybe one day...
