Working with pre-existing video

I have a series of pre-existing mp4s created using another platform.

Eventually, I want to build a proper software simulation project for each of them, but I'd like to pull off and Early Win by bringing them into Captivate and adding captions.

Is this something that can be done?

You will have to be sure they are in the proper H264 codec, if not you can use the Adobe Media Encoder to re-encode.

If you import the video as slide video, you can use it to create an interactive video. That is not really a software simulation however. Here is a link to one I published on my blog:

Custom Play./pause button

Adding standard non-interactive objects on top of the video is possible. However if it is a big video, you could get synchronisation problems. Anyway, it will never be a fully interactive training simulation. Personally I would opt for the Interactive video.
