508 and button states

My course has finally almost passed through our 3rd party 508 check.  My last issue is that the screen reader will read the button, ie, "Closed Caption On", however when the state changes to "CC Off" the screen reader says "Button", and needs to say "CC Off".  How do I get the screen reader to read the off states of the buttons? I am thinking it is within the code, but I am not a coder so I don't even know where to find it in the html, or even using an inspector.

Thank you
