Hey!

Since the latest update, Captivate is akting me to replace "missing fonts" after opening a project.

The fonts aren't missing, I can see them working fine on the first slide.

It always misses Lucida Sans, which I don't use in my projects.

No matter which font I choose of even if I cancel, every font in my projects will be replaced by Tahoma.

I've tried opening projects with customers corporate fonts and projects which only use Arial, all of them get this message. Unit Pro for example.

The only option I have right now, is to let Captivate replace all of my fonts and put them back to what I used before manually.

After that it won't ask me to replace, but that can't be the way to go? This takes forever

I'm on macOS Mojave 10.14.4.

Thanks, I just did that.

I didn't even know "update missing fonts" was a feature, I never saw it until this update.

It's a great new feature if it works properly - now all of our projects company wide cannot find the font we use for our projects. This only started happening after the 2019 Update 2... so it is a bug. 😕

Hey,

When you open a project and see a Missing Font Dialog, you would be see seeing it only when the fonts are missing on your system. Here are few quick links to get more info, on when the dialog would come and where all it looks to show missing fonts in project.

Replace missing fonts in Captivate

Captivate (2019 release) Update 2 - FAQ

If you see missing fonts dialog , even when you have the font (with all font faces) on your system. Please write back to us. We will definitely look into it  and help you. Hope this helps.

Note:You would not have been seen the issue (missing fonts) in previous versions because previously it was silently falling back to some default fonts when fonts were missing.

#FontsAreNotMissingOnOurSystem

This ONLY started happening after we all started installing the update 18th/19th June.

We have a custom company font we use, therefore everyone is instructed to install this before using the company template, which only uses this font.

Please resolve this issue ASAP.

kind regards

I think the keywords in Shivani's answer here are "with all font faces".  That's the bit that seems to have fouled everything up.  It's quite possible that you can have the font installed but NOT with every single possible font face that belongs to it.  There can be dozens.

It would have been great if there had been some more thought put into the implementation of this 'feature' to ensure that it wasn't going to cause this much disruption.  It's what this entire update for Captivate 2019 is going to be remembered for.

HI Rod - the font we are using has Light and Bold associated with it - I think 99% of our projects use Light (With Italic, bold etc of Light when required). I literally don't understand what's happening - is Captivate saying You are using FontX in your project but you don't have all possible version of this font installed (Because FontX may have Italic, Underscore etc), so what Captivate is going to do is remove all references of the font just in case you've attempted to use one not on your machine with a font that you do have all versions of on your machine??

And they added this but not Cut and Paste into a State from outside of the State?!

Don't ask me why Adobe did this.  I don't have any part in such decisions.  I'm just a user like yourself.  This is just one of many instances where the Captivate developers were not aware of the way most end users would be affected by implementing a feature that probably looked quite innocent on paper.

Thankfully I always use only web-safe fonts for any of my courses so I got away with minimal disruption this time.

The thing I find really funny about all this is the way this feature is described in the marketing blurb:

MissingFontsBoostProductivity.png

There would be quite a few people on this forum who would beg to differ that the feature has "boosted their productivity".

@Rod, have mentioned the problem during testing, but not always heard. It is a pity because this update has enhancements which are worthwhile, others which I don't really like because they will lead to bad practice.

I often use Adobe fonts, no problems so far. I have been opening several older projects with Adobe fonts in CP2019.

After being away from Captivate for a few months, I'm getting first-hand experience with this feature and I don't like it at all. When it first showed itself, I thought that I could just go through the steps, replace the missing fonts and that would take care of everything. What I discovered is that when I reopened the file in which all the fonts were replaced, I got the message again. After a few tries, I finally woke up to the fact that I could prevent the message from reoccuring. Unfortunately, I get the message every time I open an existing courses that hasn't been opened since before the update. This feature is definitely not boosting my productivity considering I have to deal with the dialogue box every time I open a file that's been dormant for a while.

Hi there - I found the issue is resolved by doing a Save As or simply saving the file and when it says This file needs to be saved as the latest version of Captivate, select Ok. Everything is then fine. Can you replicate these steps?

The font replacement takes place before you can save the file.

So all the correct fonts have been lost already at that point.

Yes and I pointed that out earlier - this is the only User Solution we have right now -

a) Open the file

b) At the Font alert select your Font as the replacement

c) Go through your file and see 90%+ of your fonts replaced with Tahoma (Notice in my experience not 100%)

d) Replace your fonts with your own/custom ones (Yes this is the pain)

e) Save As/Save and acknowledge that the file will be upgraded to V2

f) Open the file again and see no font alert.

I'm going to do a screen recording for Adobe and share it with them so they can see the issue first hand. Hopefully they will realise there is a fault and fix it.

I recall saving the first few files I opened - only to have the dialogue appear again. On the other hand, I may be mistaken about that sequence. I'll try again.

I haven't checked the font substitution in the files I worked on at first. From what I've read in this thread, I should confirm that they are still using the correct fonts.

Thank you for the suggestions. (Bottom line, though, I agree that this feature does NOT boost my productivity.)

Hi Everyone,

We were able to figure out a case where you would probably see a font not missing like Times New Roman getting replaced. To put in simpler words, any missing fonts replaced in the older version were temporary, as they were happening silently and originally assigned fonts were always remembered by the Captivate.
I will try to explain with an example:

  • In Captivate 2017, lets say you are using a text caption and assigned font "Coniferous" to it in properties.
  • Now, you open the same project on your other machine in captivate 2017, where “Coniferous” is not available . In this machine, the Text caption will show “Times New Roman” (system fallback font). Now, Even when you save the project with the Times New Roman as the font for text caption, captivate still remembers the original font assigned by the user, which happens to be “Coniferous” in this case.
  • Now this time, when you open the same project in Captivate 2019 update 2, you see a missing fonts dialog, mentioning font "Coniferous" missing (this is because we remember the font used originally), when you do a replace say with Tahoma, Text caption 1 will have font Tahoma as it was originally using “Coniferous” . This is the case where you might be seeing other fonts getting replaced by Tahoma.

Hope this explains your case. Here is the link to a small video, i created demonstrating the above mentioned case: https://adobe.ly/2lEaF88
Please note that this case is only when a older version file is opened in captivate 2019 update 2.

Regards,

Shivani

Hey,

When missing fonts are listed, we check for the fonts in Styles in Object Style Manager, Master Slides and  objects. The missing fonts that you are seeing in your project, may not be used for objects, but may be somewhere in styles or Master slides .  In case of “Cancel” , the font fallback will replace the missing font with Tahoma. But if you specifically  choose a font and then click replace fonts. Objects/Styles using Lucida Sans now would have the newly selected font. Please confirm that this is the behavior you are seeing

You can check the “don’t show Again checkbox” and the dialog wouldn’t show for the project again.

Also, If you still have an issue, please share a project with us to look into it.

As I described, every font gets replaced with Tahoma, no matter which one I choose in the window.

And ALL fonts get replaced, not only Lucida Sans, which I do not (knowingly) use anywhere.

I may be able to create a dummy file on the weekend, now I'm busy rolling back to an older version to continue working.

I just send you a test file.

It is using a font provided by a customer and Calibri light.

Both are installed and working fine on an Captivate version before the update.

Updates 2 claims Lucida Sans ist missing, not the two fonts I’m using.

No matter which font I choose as a replacement, both working fonts are going to be replaced by Tahoma.

I took some screenshots to show this behavior:

Got the same problem.

Made a new project yesterday in CP2019 with the new update where I used Arial Unicode.

Now, when I re-open the project, CP prompted me that the font is missing. I pressed cancel to close the diagoue box. Still it changed everything to Tahoma.

Now, there is only 3 categories of fonts:

  1. Three theme fonts (Tahoma listed twice and Trebuchet MS).
  2. Web Safe fonts
  3. System fonts

CP does not load the Adobe fonts.

I'm paying for the full Adobe CC with the same Adobe ID (in case it could have something to do with that).

Same result when I tried it on another computer with the new CP update installed. Here I used both my own license and another.

Did you see this document?

Replace missing fonts in Captivate

Were you logged in to the CC app while working in CP?  Since it seems that you have issues with the Adobe fonts (formerly Typekit)?

You have to check master slides and object styles as explained in the doc.

Hi,

You need to login in Creative Cloud with the same id as that used in captivate for Adobe fonts to show up.

Please check this link Captivate (2019 release) Update 2 - FAQ

You should see this missing font dialog only when the font is missing on your system. Please confirm that the font is available on the system or not. Also, when close is clicked, the missing fonts is replaced with default fonts (which happens to be tahoma in this case).

Please get back to us, if you still have a issue.

2. The font Arial Unicode was in my 'system' (read Adobe Captivate) yesterday. Today it is not in Captivate. The font is in my 'system' (Windows).

3. I still got the issue

4. The fonts are missing also when I'm opening a new project.

Hey,

Regarding the font being in system, since the font is not in Adobe captivate,. Thats, why the Missing fonts dialog is coming.

Also, I am assuming when you say opening a new project, you mean creating a new project, you are having the issue  that the missing fonts dialog is coming. For this,Please try the following steps:

1.Close Captivate.

2.Go to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Adobe\eLearning Assets\Layouts (On Windows)

3.Rename the 11_5 folder to something else

4.now relaunch Captivate and create a new project.

You shouldn't see the missing font dialog now. I hope this helps.

Hey,

No, not at all. We haven't reduced the number of fonts that can be used in Captivate. Its same as in  the older versions.  The Missing Fonts dialog is a way of telling  that few fonts used in the project are not available on your system/ captivate. Here are few links that will be helpful.

Never mind. I have a feeling that I'm writing with a Adobe bot.

The fonts appear as they should both in Adobe Photoshop in Office and in Windows 10 generally. Even in the legendary drawing tool 'Paint.exe' the also legendary font 'Helvetica' wants to play with me.

I re-installed CP 2019 without the latest update. Not surprisingly, the fonts are no longer missing......

This is happening to me too. That's a good idea to re-install the older version! Luckily I had only updated to the 11.5.0.476 on my main system and not my laptop yet, so at least I can open files without font issues on my laptop. I'll try to reinstall the older version on my main system until this bug is fixed. It's a HUGE wast of time.

This missing font thing is causing way too many issues. One of my projects says I am missing the Lobster font. So I install the Lobster font, and it overrides my Times New Roman font and then messes with my button rollover states by putting a lock on them and changing the size of the button. Because of the missing font issue, I have rolled back to vers 11.0.1 and most likely won't update to the 11.5 version.

I'm having the same issue! Adobe needs to fix the "smart font replacement" feature. I'm receiving the "Update Missing Fonts" dialog for all of my Adobe fonts. I've ensured that I'm signed into my Creative Cloud application and nothing I'm trying works. I think I'm going to go back to the previous version of Captivate.

I personally would like to see two additional buttons added to this dialog. The first would be a button to take you to Adobe Fonts where you could reconcile the missing font before opening the project. The second would be to close the project without adjusting the font choices. It's important to understand what the two buttons do in this case. Close will apply the default font, while Replace will replace fonts with whatever you selected from the dropdown. Those are not the only two choices that I want.

Before the feature of using Adobe fonts, each Captivate course, in order to be viewed the same way by all learners, could use only the very limited set of Websafe fonts.

For other fonts, if you hare in a non-responsive project with no dynamic text (which is text embedding variables) it didn't matter, because text was converted to images to overcome the limitation to websafe fonts. However that is not the case for fluid boxes projects, nor for dynamic text.

I embedded the Arial Unicode from Google Fonts. And before the latest CP version I also used TK

Hi ya - we are using static text areas and non-responsive projects; we duplicate the slide and fill in text where required. As we are using a custom font, does Captivate convert this into images? I have no idea what is going on here, but I have issued a company wide alert for managers to instruct teams not to upgrade to the latest patch. Those of us that have have to wait out a resolution as the font replacement tool doesn't 100% work (I found sections in our custom font AND Tahoma or whatever the standard auto replacement font is)....

It is a bit frustrating for me, because I do NOT have problems with that update, when opening older projects. And I do have static text containers, but I only use websafe or Adobe fonts.

Static text in a non-responsive project is normally converted to images on publishing. Wondering if the font issues reported are linked to the fact that when opening such a project the search for missing fonts is not taking into account that it doesn't matter for static text?

Do you have older version still installed? Have you tried creating a file and using a non web safe / adobe font then bring into 2019 Update 2?

I got the Font Replace box this morning and I selected our custom font (And it has to stay this way as we are a multi national and it won't be changed for Adobe) as the one to switch the font content to. It changed about 25%.

That is just irritating.

And where is the font replacer? Oh, only available when opening the project?

Not funny Adobe....

No older version, except very old ones like 5.5 and 6, which cannot be updated to the present version. When the demise of Flash player was announced 3 years ago I started publishing only to HTML5 and never used a non-websafe font. Maybe I should have insisted more in my blog on this. I have explained the reasons all the time to my clients, until they understood.

So I am currently working my way through replacing the Tahoma font with custom one and hit Save. Was told this file was be converted to the Latest Version and couldn't be opened by older versions any more.

This lead to a theory - i created a new blank project in the 2019 Version 2 update, added a text field with custom font - saved and then closed it. Then reopened it to find everything ok, no font replacement option, custom font in place.

So this leads me to think, any newly created content from Version 2 will be fine.

Any content created in Version 1 and prior will have the issue and you will have the pain of a font replacement by hand. Then all will be fine.

Until Adobe resolve this.

Hi there - I don't think the world wide Captivate user base need individual calls. Just a single new micro patch.

a) Content created in Captivate 2019 Version 1 and prior with a custom font (And often not) when loaded into Captivate 2019 Version 2 will trigger a Font Replacement Alert box. This doesn't 100% replace the affected fonts.

b) Editing the text boxes by hand back to the original custom font and then saving (With the "This file will be updated to the latest version and cannot be opened in previous versions" alert), closing then opening the project again in Version 2 resolves the issue

c) Content created in Version 2 with custom fonts save, close and open with no issue

Adobe please hot fix this.

Similar situation here, but unfortunately, all of the developers have already installed the latest update (I typically have very high trust in Adobe). Therefore, I've had to completely halt production and instruct all of my developers to not open any courses until this gets repaired (or we roll back).

Fortunately, I opened a course this morning and 90% of the issue is gone. I did have a whole list of fonts that the system was wanting to replace, most of them consisted of the Adobe Fonts. Oddly, it now only has a couple of fonts (it's no loner listing any of the Adobe fonts).

Any update on this? Has this been resolved? Half the company hasn't upgraded to 2019 Version 2 because of this Bug.

Claire, you were invited for a private call. Maybe you missed it, but I do never have the problem you and some others encounter.  It is much easier to find a solution for a 'bug' which is affecting everyone, than when it is not the case.

Please, answer to that invitation for your sake and the sake of other users.

Hi TBH I had nothing to state whether these came from a trustworthy source. I didn't want to start sharing company information / copies of company elearning files with someone who could potentially be pretending to be from Adobe. I tried going via the Adobe support page/Live chat and was told This font replacement is a feature *facepalm* ... it is a broken feature.

How do I ensure a trustworthy pipeline to Adobe?

Unlike normal Captivate users such as you and I, people on this forum who have the word STAFF in red letters under their Adobe ID actually DO work for Adobe.

If you don't want to trust them with your content, that's fine.  Just create a blank project that demonstrates the same issue and give that to the staffer who is trying to help you.

And don't believe everything you get told by someone on a chat forum.  In my experience none of those people actually have any experience whatsoever with using Captivate.  They're just rolling through scripted questions to filter your enquiry.

You have a golden opportunity to communicate with a staffer who is reaching out to you from the Captivate development team itself.  I think you should grab the offer with both hands.  These offers ONLY usually occur during the initial flurry of bugs that get shaken out of a new release.  After that you're pretty much only going to get help from other experienced users around here.

Thanks Rod - I'm communicating with Shivani via email and also Apurva on Adobe tech chat - the latter directed me here:

Captivate (2019 release) Update 2 - FAQ

Which seems to indicate, as mentioned before, if you use a custom font, the ENTIRE font pack has to be installed for Captivate to avoid flagging the Font Replacement tool. I have asked Apurva to confirm this - Shivani this would be also helpful if you could do this.

Anyone else NOT experiencing this issue, it would also be helpful to know if you are using a font in your file where you have the ENTIRE font pack for that font installed. We only use the Light and Bond fonts from our pack and everyone just has those installed.

Shivani - I am working without tech department to see if we can allow an Adobe tunnel to my machine to observe the issue first hand.
