Hello,

Is there a solution to convert the old captivate files (.cp) and convert them to captivate 7 or 8?

Thanks,

Maryam

We tackled this issue last year.  As I recall, Adobe sent me a link to download and install the Trial Version of Adobe Captivate 5.5.  This way, I had 30 days to complete all of my conversions.  I then opened each Captivate 4 file in Captivate 5.5 and saved it.  After re-saving all Captivate 4 files, I was able to open the 5.5 files in Captivate 7, and save them as a Captivate 7 file.  We did have to make some adjustments in the new files.

    Lilybiri,

Thanks for the warning=) It's Captivate 4 files that I wanted to be able to open in 7 or 8 and scrub the slides. I understand that it won't be smooth conversion. The content has changed, too. So as long as I have the original files then I can open, edit, modify, and update the slides.

It will often be quicker to re-create them using the assets. Of course it depends on the type of files. I just wanted to offer a warning

Thank you for your feedback. I didn't have the older version of captivate, so reached out to support and I'm downloading version 5 and 6 hoping that would allow me to open the old files and save them as newer version and convert them all.

You didn't tell which 'old' version you are talking about. I just want to warn you: do not expect the conversion to be smooth, you'll have a lot of editing work. So much has changed since version 4 (last version which had cp extension): introduction of Themes (object styles, master slides and skin), no longer support for AS2, text engine totally changed, quizzes have a lot of new features which can screw up in older versions. Personally I would never try to convert over so many versions, but try to use the assets and start from scratch in CP8.

Agreed with Rick. I *think* each version of Captivate will open up to two versions back (older), but it may be just one version back...

So if you want to get up to CP8 and have, say, a CP4 file...at best you can open that CP4 file in CP6 (unless CP5.5 counts as a 'version'), then in CP8.

If my recollection is incorrect, you'll need to open in every successive version.

If stuck, PM me here and I may be able to help...as I have pretty much every version of CP, though not all of them are installed.

Depends on how old they are. The "solution" is to open them using an older version such as 5 or 6. Then open them again in the newer 7 or 8 version. Unfortunately there is no "magick bullet" and there are no guarantees that it would convert to the newer version cleanly. Sometimes the answer is to just bite the bullet and re-create the content in the newer version.

    Cheers... Rick
