Error saving cptx file

A course I've been working on for the past couple of weeks suddenly had a problem today when I tried closing Captivate.  I had already saved the file, but received an error message and followed the instructions to recover the Cache folder, but when Captivate tries to open it, after several seconds, it just closes.  Can anyone assist?  Also, my backup file is unavailable as well.  I get the same message trying to open it as well.

I believe you are most likely correct that Redirect caused your issue.  Captivate is not designed to work that way. If you want to work with Captivate and avoid file corruption issues then you need to set up folders on your local PC hard drive and ONLY work from them.  Your Preferences > Default Folders should also both be set to local hard drive folders and Generate Project Backup should be turned on by default at the Global level in Preferences. Are these files and folders all located on your local PC hard drive or are you working over a network LAN?

Hi Rod,

 

I was able to restore my cptx file.  I re-read the instructions and realized that I needed to drill down to the \db folder before creating a zipped file.  I would, however, like to figure out what happened in the first place.  The files are only my PC, however, we use a Redirect folder and not sure if that was causing the problem.  I have been creating quite a few files over the past several months as we provide demos/prototypes to the client and haven't had this experience before.  I also had not seen my backup file be dated 3 days prior to the last save of the cptx.  Maybe that file was also affected at the same time.  And, we're in the process of removing the Redirect program!

If you want to work with Captivate and avoid file corruption issues then you need to set up folders on your local PC hard drive and ONLY work from them.  Your Preferences > Default Folders should also both be set to local hard drive folders and Generate Project Backup should be turned on by default at the Global level in Preferences.

 

Never directly work on CPTX files that reside on a network.  Always download the project files to your local hard drive FIRST and open it from there in Captivate.  When finished, save and close down Captivate FIRST, then use Windows Explorer to upload your finished CPTX to the network if you want it backed up.

 

Project file corruption is usually caused by NOT doing these things.  IT departments usually aren't happy to have you working on everything locally because they want total control over the file system.  But they usually back off if you tell them that working any other way with Captivate is likely to cause them support headaches.
