If you are in the Record panel, try doing this:

Go to Window -> Workspace -> Reset "Record"...

 

That should get you back to the default layout that has both the timeline and the scene in it.

Ya know I found that before and last night I couldn't. Thanks. I don't know why anyone would want to edit in the record mode without timeline.
