I was working on my animation and tried using the swap sets tool, then Adobe suddenly crashed. Now everything I worked on is gone!! The files all read 0 kB. where does Adobe character animator Beta version save its crash files?

Sorry Ch crashed on you. Normally projects are saved in Documents/Adobe/Character Animator (Beta), but you can save them anywhere on your hard drive.

It's normal that .chproj files are zero-sized — they are just placeholders to identify the folder that contains all the project data (Ch Media and Ch Data folders).

Everything is always saved, and it's almost impossible to lose Ch project data now with projects created in version 4.0 and later, unless the hard drive is failing.

What version of Ch are you using? What happens when you open the .chproj file?

Impossible? Horse pucky! I saved my versions faithfully as I was rigging. A system crash caused the computer to shut down. I went to the Beta directory. The youngest file in there is from 2018. The youngest project is from 8 days ago. Any other suggestions?

LATEST

The mod date on the zero-sized .chproj file is not updated, so don't use that as an indicator of update-to-dateness.

Does the recent files list (File > Open Recent Project > xxx) show anything?

Hi Dave, Thanks for your quick response.

Now I understand they are just placeholders - it makes sense why the .chproj file reads 0kb.

I'm using version 4.4 (Build 11) - What worked for me is I ended up selecting my scene file, then opened it while holding the shift key down. I don't know why this worked but I was able to recover the lost files this way. Before I was just double-clicking the saved file and when it opened the scene was empty.

Glad to hear it's working now!

Opening a project with the Shift key held down can sometimes work around a problem because it resets open puppets/scene panels, and also de-selects everything.
