I hit record it says its recording ... then it freezes

Sorry that it's locking up. Can you provide some additional information, such as your OS version, version of Character Animator, and if there are any other apps running (especially if they can also play back or record audio)?

Also, if you go into Character Animator's Preferences > Audio Hardware pane, are all the settings correct for what you expect your audio hardware to be?
