70% CPU usage when having overlays over puppets? :S

Hi Guys

So i've had no problems with cpu usage up until i've wanted to put an overlay to mimic light coming through the trees and over the top of my puppet.

Having it as a part of my .ai puppet is unusable, so i've got it as a new puppet (saved to like 150kb .psd as anything larger was still slow) in the scene and it works ok i guess, but the cpu is still staggeringly high and affecting the response rate. Thats with basically everything apart from Ch closes aswell.

Is there a way to stop this overlay being so labour intensive?

Without the overlay it runs low and smooth (around 30% CPU)

I'd put it in post but this puppet might be used live so i can't have it lag and i'm going to have the light fading in an out :S

Cheers

Rob

Hahah, easily one of my favorite animals!

Quick update, CPU doesn't seem to be a correlating issue as i just tested the Stardust/unicorn puppet and thats at 125% and smooth haha!

Also, i still had the front water overlay as part of the .ai (no issues till i added the psd light overlays) so i turned that into a psd and she runs smoothly (same 'cpu usage) but no delays.

So i guess having vector overlays are a no no, which means ill have to layer a scene like above, any chance this is fixable in futur

My understanding is that the way Illustrator renders things is a different system than Photoshop, and we don't support everything they can do passively in realtime just yet. But your request is duly noted!

Note: you can set the opacity of layers as well, including in CH using the Transform behavior. You can then do a replay recording of the opacity level blending up and down. A couple of those could look nice overlapping.

CH does not support all AI features as you say (and Oksamuai knows all!)

I had a go with some light - not sure if this is what you are after. I started with https://www.2minutephotoshop.com/how-to-stream-light-through-windows/ to get a PSD file with a few layers in it with light coming through the window. I am not much of a photoshop user, so I put a black transparent layer in front of the image to darken it down a bit.

Note I created groups from the two rays of light layers - that was needed as you cannot add a Transform to the leaf, you have to add it to a group. So in CH I ended up with the follow structure, where I added "Transform" behaviors to the Light1 and Light2 groups (for adjusting the opacity).

I set the default opacity for the two transforms to zero, then did recordings sliding the opacity up and down over time.

I just used my mouse to drag the percentage values up/down by hand over time to control the opacity by hand.

Final result. White might have been better than yellow, but you get the idea! Having two overlapping layers of light gives it a bit more depth.

I don't know about speed/performance, but you can then turn the recording into a "replay" and trigger that live with the keyboard.

And if that is not what you were trying to do, oops!

Yea exactly what i was looking to do, had a more rudimentary version worked out but that looks alot nicer than my gradient-less chunks, will definitely update it cheers!

Was watching the replays tutorial and just did exactly what you just said, with the help of my midi keyboard haha.

My biggest worry was triggering different puppets and being able to control the main one with camera input but it woked perfectly!

So everything worked out in the end
