CRASH REPORT

Animator started quitting, shortly after loading, this morning. I started getting these "Crash Report" s pop up and I haven't been able to use the program since. I'm not sure if I had just updated before or after the initial crash. I have installed and uninstalled different versions, to no avail(4.4 and 22.0). The program starts up and prompts me to create a new project or open a saved one. Whatever action I take or click on from there, CA crashes. I really love CA and have many ongoing projects., but I am now at a standstill. Any suggestions?

I'm using a Mac mini (Late 2012), running Catalina 10.15.7

Whenever I try to open a file or activate a puppet, it instantly crashes everything.

Hi TheGrocer73... A few questions to help us diagnose what might be going on and/or work around the issue:

  • Any new software updated recently?
  • If you try to launch Character Animator and then hold down the Shift key while it's starting up, does it avoid the crash? How about holding down the Option key as it's starting up?
  • If you start with fresh preferences (as follows), does it help?
    1. Open a Finder window, choose Go > Go To Folder, then enter ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/
    2. Rename the Character Animator subfolder as Character Animator-backup
    3. Relaunch Character Animator
  • When you saw the crash window (the one that has "Adobe Crash Report" or similar in the title bar, did you submit a crash report? If so, would you be willing to send a crash report and include your email address with it? Then, send me a direct message with your email address so that I can try to locate the crash report on our backend system.

Thanks.

I have not received that specific type of report again, however. I will keep restarting CH from time to time and look for one. Also, thank you for the response."

Thanks for the replies, although was unclear about the Yes responses -- so do those actions avoid the crash? Or is it still crashing regardless of what was suggested to try?

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies, although was unclear about the Yes responsesSorry, Yes, I did attempt those actions. -- so do those actions avoid the crash? No, they didn't stop the crash-holding down shift or option, as starting up. I am still retrying, whenever I am back on my computer. Or is it still crashing regardless of what was suggested to try?It crashes and sends error reports.

I have an open case, with adobe, but despite technical support from Adobe helping me, we still didn't come to any

fix.

Thank

Do you have any third-party plug-ins installed, such as in the following folder?

    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore/

(Note that the above path is the system Library folder, not user Library folder. So, in a Finder window, navigate from your system drive, e.g., Macintosh HD.)

If there are files in that MediaCore folder other than one called dummy.txt, can you try temporarily removing it from that folder, then seeing if it allows Character Animator to launch?

Also, if you use any other Adobe video application like After Effects or Premiere Pro, do those other apps launch OK?

Oh, any recently installed fonts?

Thanks.

Also, if you use any other Adobe video application like After Effects or Premiere Pro, do those other apps launch OK? The Video apps run OK, but photoshop started quitting for a while too.

Oh, any recently installed fonts?Yes! I had recently installed some fonts. They were freebies that I downloaded from a site.

I might not sound like it in type, but I really appreciae such dilligent help. I'm just not used to it. I installed Character Animator on my brother's gaming computer, but don't want to use it on that particular comp. However, I love making the animations and think they will help me become better rounded artist. I'll still welcome any help that comes this way. Thank You.

Thanks.

If there were any recently installed fonts, could you try uninstalling them temporarily to see if that helps the app launch? I'm wondering if there's some incompatibility with some font-related code (even though Character Animator doesn't use fonts directly).

Thanks.

I uninstalled the fonts and restarted everything. However, the program still crashed. Sorry I haven't responded in a timely manner. I moved files to a Windows computer. I've been trying to make up for lost time. I'm able to design new characters, on this computer, however, it's only for temporary use. Would you recommend I wipe everything off my Mac-the computer that CHaracter Animator and often PS and Pr have been recently crashing? Should I uninstall/reinstall and get all my related files and folders deleted?

I'd like to hold off on trying something that extreme if it can be resolved in an easier way. I think 10.15.7 is the latest for 10.15, so a smaller OS update doesn't seem like it's available, and larger ones to macOS 11 or 12 might not be supported on your machine or other apps you might use on the machine.

Can you post a screenshot (or, preferably, the text contents) of the crash dialog box that appears?

Thanks.

Also, please post a snapshot of when this happens:

The program starts up and prompts me to create a new project or open a saved one

which sounds strange, since Ch doesn't normally ask to open a project, it just re-opens the last one or creates a new one without asking.
