When I export the scene, I'm getting a video that only shows that small area highlighted in the center of my screenshot.

Make sure your scene dimensions (the brighter rectangular area you see) matches the dimensions you want. Select the scene in the Project panel, then adjust the Width and Height values in the Properties panel on the right. The export uses the scene dimensions.

You can also try scaling the puppet down in Character Animator -- select the puppet in the Project panel, then under the Transform behavior (in the Properties panel), adjust the Scale value.
