I've tried using sticks and making the table non-independent, but this glues the torso in place, and I'd like it to slide around. I've also tried pinning but to no avail. I see that the relationship between the origin and the origin of the parent (the top level puppet in this case) does make a difference, but I still can't find a placement that completely stops the table from warping.

I don't know if you've looked at these for reference, but there are several puppets behind tables/desks that you can download to see how they figured it out. Pro mode example puppets (adobe.com)

Normally, I'd make the table a separate puppet, but then you couldn't put the arms on top of the table. What happens when you make the table independent?

Thank you so much! The Barbarasaurus was the perfect example. I am making my desk independant so that it doesn't warp, and what ultimately solved the problem was to make my table's origin overlap with my character's pinned feet (the same way you'd place your upper arm pivot in a place that overlaps with the torso)
