I’ve never seen the green color change for overlap of shapes/ hierarchy

I've never seen the green overlap of shapes when using character animator.  Is there a preference that I've missed?  Please explain.

Also I've kept my illustrator files and photoshop files in the correct hierarchy but when I move to character animator i have files within files of the same name. How to i clea up  this problem???

Perhaps

(1) Pentagon icon

(Show mesh outlines and automatic outlines) should be checked.

(2) If you duplicate or group layers within CharacterAnimater

When you  re-edit the original in Illustrator or Photoshop, the layers are duplicated.

What is the best way to get rid of the excessive file structure?  Is there a way to move handles from one layer to another so i can delete the excess layers?

Extra layers can be erased by selecting the corresponding layer and pressing the
Press the delete key to make it disappear.
