Skype Wirecast Alternatives (Mac)

I see in the FAQs Telestream Wirecast can be used to use with Skype
But $1000 is a bit steep for me just to do fun Skype calls

Anyone have any other ways to set your characters as an virtual camera?

Maybe you can use OBS Studio with Skype. OBS is a free open source app --  easy to use and quite versatile. I just started using it for recording, but haven't gotten to streaming yet.There is some discussion here https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/obs-virtualcam.539/ about Skype, and a search turns up lots more.
