Using trigger to move an object

Hi there,

Very new to character animator, and so far I've set up this character below to have most of the same actions as the Red Monster preset. Talking, moving body, blinking, etc.

What I want to do is set a trigger to cause the shoes to lift off the ground and come back down in a walking animation, similar to this reference here:

WALK REFERENCE.gif

I haven't been able to figure it out. The closest I've gotten is adding the walk behavior and tagging both shoes as the feet of the character, but that wildly distorts the shoes. I know you can cause layers to appear or go between frames with triggers, but not how to transform them.

I'm sure this is a frequently asked question, but I'm not sure how to explain the issue in a Google search, and the walk animation tutorials I've seen are usually for humanoid characters.

Any help would be appreciated.
