Where should the pupils go on the quarter views?

There are two logical places, and I need it to match the way the program is built.

Logical places:
1. Looking at the same distant object that the front view is looking at.
2. Looking directly ahead in the direction I am facing.

Which is it?

Thanks in advance.

(PS, if the answer is "1", you may wish to adjust the tag icons, because they make it look like the answer is "2")

This is more an aesthetic choice than a fixed one. Personally I rarely do 1, and either do 2 or a more exaggerated version where I'm looking more to the right/left. Play around and see what works best for your specific character.
