OK, I have been writing CF code for almost nine years but my boss is moving our department to asp.net. I am trying to start up my own contractor company on the side and continue to do CF development. The latest version we have of CF is 7 but we aren't really doing anything with it. We have Dreamweaver MX and 8. But for me I am wondering if any version of Dreamweaver really gets me something that I couldn't get with Eclipse that is free.

I'm a moderate person. Both are fine IDEs some *love* Dreamweaver some
*love* Eclipse.

So if you like Eclipse and it does the job for you then you are not
missing anything by not using Dreamweaver.

I suppose what I am asking is can I get CF * tag support for dreamweaver 8. Since I haven't been working with 8 or even 7 as much I would like, I would like tag support and it looks like eclipse has it and I am wondering I can get the added tags for Dreamweaver 8.

I believe so. I believe you just download the tag definitions and
install them in Dreamweaver. I do know but I do not think there are any
compatibility issues. Aren't these definition files fairly straight
forward text files.

I use DW8 and it has tag support for CF7. There is probably a CF8 extension you can get but until we upgrade, I wouldn't know for sure.

There is an extension:

http://www.adobe.com/support/coldfusion/downloads.html

Using Eclipse with CFEclipse is fine, but you do lose the design view portion.

does anyone really use a design view with cfml pages??? any pages?

i love dw, and it is my main ide for cf development. but may i suggest
if you use dw to only use code view, especially with anything but basic
html pages (and even with those if you are serious and care about the
code you produce, be it even plain html).

just add .cfm and .cfc extensions to the list of files to be opened only
in code view under dw preferences -> file types/editors. you won't even
be able to switch to design view for those files then...

one and a 3/4 gripe i have with the cf8 dw extension (see Ken's post
above for url) is with the cf help that comes with it:
- the lack of attributes explanation in the Adobe CFML Reference help
section (1/2 gripe)
- total lack of anything useful in the Adobe CF Functions Reference help
section (1 gripe)
- typos in a couple of attribute names suggested by dw code hinting (1/4
gripe)

with so many new tags and functions added in cf8, this is a bit of a
bummer. cf7 extension was great - loved the help. no i have to open my
cfml reference pdf when i need to lookup a function syntax...

I use Eclipse and used Homesite before that. I have used Dreamweaver in the past, to be honest it is just over kill for development in my mind, it takes a shed load of RAM as soon as it starts and the price it OTT.

Eclipse with CFEclipse is fantastic. The Subversion integration alone beats dreamweaver in my mind, plus if you are integrating CF with Java then it is a must. If you are doing JavaScript dev then the JSEclipse plugin is really good so is Aptana.

Seeing as Adobe are backing the Eclipse platform for Flex development it seems that they will surely begin to back Eclipse more strongly for CF development.

In closing I have been using Eclipse for nearly 3 years and I have never regretted it for a second. Add to that free and with a really active community especially in the UK I cannot back it more strongly.
