CFMX7 and Java1.6

New Here ,
Feb 01, 2007 Feb 01, 2007
I just switched a new CFMX7.0.2 install to use Java 1.6.0_b105 instead of the stock Java 1.4.2_09 that installs with it. This is a multiserver install and JRun has updater 6 applied and the recent security hotfix.

Most things are fine but I'm getting a 500 error when I click on Verity Collections in CFADMIN. Has anyone else run into this?

cf's not certified to run on JDK 1.6. other stuff is probably broken as well.

yes. verity still works ok, but you can't use the admin to change verity settings.

i find that it's worth the hassle in, even/especially in production, because of the access to jconsole that later java releases give you.

Further testing tells me I can't create collections programatically either. So I'm back using 1.4.2_13 which happens to be installed on the server for Adobe Lifecycle. That version isn't certified either but seems to be working. Is it somewhat safe to assume that newer versions of 1.4.2 will probably work?

I was looking for a 1.5 version to try but can't find it on the sun.java.com site. There's a tech note on how to configure CFMX to run with it. Can anyone point me toward that or does the app server java version jump from 1.4 to 1.6?

btw - This is all in the name of keeping IT Security happy.

thanks

I have CFMX 6.1 running on 1.5.0_10, no problems.

I don't use verity.

"no problems" is impossible. among other things i *know* webservices will break.

No problems on my app, which doesn't use Verity or web services.

I also saw a significant speed bump when going from 1.4 to 1.5.

However, any time you switch to something that isn't certified or supported, you should test fully to ensure everything you need is working. I assume anyone that moves to an unsupported configuration is aware of that, but maybe not...

Steve Erat's blog has some notes about getting Verity/CFAdmin to work with Java 5 or 6.
