I can confirm that just as you say you "can switch Builder 2018 between ColdFusion 11 or Coldfusion 2016", you can do that with cf2021 (or 2018).

The only thing you can't do is choose 2021 as a language level, which of course affects some aspects of course, but MOST of your use of cfb will not be impacted, and of course you "can edit cf2021 code in cfbuilder 2018".

And for those who know how to connect cfb to a cf server, in the servers or rds windows, that can be done with cf2021 today in CFB 2018, just like they may do it with cf2018.

A next question may be when Adobe will come out with a 2021 version of cfb. It is planned, and has been announced that it will be based on the very popular Visual Studio Code (vscode) cross-platform ide, rather than the older Eclipse ide. (And yes, they've said they plan to offer it as either a plugin or a branded full installer, like with cfb on Eclipse.)

And yes, there are indeed other vs code cfml plug-ins already. We can expect the cfb one to ultimately add a lot more than those, just like cfb does also...though most folks never have fully leveraged its capabilities, so may be inclined to "see little point" in Adobe creating "yet another" cfml plug in for vs code. Time will tell.

And to that point, no release date has been setnyet, but they HAVE  said the first iteration will lack full functionality (which will only embolden the nay-sayers).

So back to your original point, current cfb users can for now just stick with the current cfb version, to work with CF2021 code and servers.
