Eclipse Versions and Total Confusion

Okay, I downloaded Eclipse Ganymede day before yesterday, only to learn it doesn't work with CFEclipse. Then I spent too much time searching Eclipse.org for the Europa version. I even called the Europa foundation, but that was a totally fruitless phone call because no one was there to answer the phone, even during normal business hours. So, then I attempted to delete Ganymede, reinstall it, then install Adobe's Eclipse plugin. That didn't work either. By reviewing the posts regarding Eclipse on this forum, I've now found the location where I can download Europa. (There are a lot more posts on the Adobe forums about Eclipse than I thought there'd be!) The only question I have now is, which of the four versions listed on the following page do I download? Considering the time and frustration I've spent on this already, I'd appreciate a bit of help in downloading the correct file that will actually work with CFEclipse.

I am not sure if that still applies. I have been using Europa and CFEclipse. But I just downloaded Ganymede and installed it separately. I have not done much with it, but can confirm the basics seem to work (creating a project, viewing a cfm page, enabling line numbers, etc..)

Anyway are my settings (old and new)

O/S: XP
Java: 1.6.0_05
* I believe any version 1.5+ should work as well

When I installed Ganymede, then attempted to install the CFEclipse plugin, Eclipse itself gave me a warning message that the plugin I was attempting to install does not work with the version of Eclipse I had installed (don't remember the exact wording, but that was the gist of it). I saw the warning on CFEclipse.org that it does not work with Ganymede, but I gave it a try anyway in case the warning was outdated.

I kept notes as I set up Eclipse the second time, on my laptop.
Been using the same build since then and loving it.

This is the newer version of Europa, which is the last recommended
version for use with CFeclipse
(europa, 3.3., is one back from the latest 3.4 'ganymede' eclipse)

Then, to get CFeclipse, open eclipse and go to "Help > Software Updates
> find and install"
Click "new remote site" and enter this url
http://www.cfeclipse.org/update, and click 'next'.

When you see the new node in the list for "cfeclipse", UNcheck the box
below to 'only show latest version',
and get the 1.3.1.6 version (including CFunit and frameworks)

Then go to "window > open perspective > other" and select "cfeclipse"
this is where the app changes into something completely different before
your eyes... impressive.

Now, to get the Aptana plugin , which has the best FTP (from what i am
reading, and my own results so far... works great with lots of
features). Aptana also has your best css , js, html and other tools.

Newsgroup User: Thank you, thank you, thank you! I followed your instructions and they worked perfectly. Now I just have to figure out how to use Eclipse! But even with the small amount of time I've spent with it, I know I'm going to like it so much better than Homesite. For one thing, I noticed that it marks misspelled words - something Homesite didn't do.

Cool, glad it helped.
Make sure you get the "aptana" plugin - that's where the FTP action is
in Eclipse.

Like homesite, you can go to the "File" view (or "File pane") and open a
remote file right on the server, editing without any up/down transfers,
really nice in some situations.

Please post here or on my forums (forums.mredesign.com) with any other
eclipse-related questions or suggestions - I've been making it up as I
go and have this strong feeling there are hidden features I am not aware
of yet, that might be big timesavers. Also have been through some
struggles (line numbers, anyone?) and might be able to help others skip
the same hassle.

Oh, yes, it does. But CFEclipse installation is a bit tricky on Ganymede.

I do believe CFEclipse 1.3.2 Beta is where the action is at the moment, not 1.3.1.6. Let's start over.

1) Download and install Ganymede.

2) Navigate to Help=>Software Updates

3) In the tab Available Software, press the button Add Site

4) Enter the Location http://www.cfeclipse.org/update/ and press OK. Eclipse should automatically connect to the CFEclipse update site.

5) Click on the + signs under the CFEclipse update, if necessary, to display all the checkboxes. Here is the source of most failed installations on Ganymede. Checking all the checkboxes will fail because you would then be attempting to install version 1.3.1.6 and 1.3.2.beta simultaneously. Not good.

Uncheck all the checkboxes. Select only the Cutting Edge option.(This action should also automatically include the CFEclipse 1.3.2.beta update)

6) Click on Install

7) Install CFEclipse 1.3.2.beta

8) Choose to restart Eclipse when prompted

That's the installation done. To open the CFEclipse perspective, navigate to Window=>Open Perspective=>other and select CFEclipse. While working in the CFEclipse perspective, most of the problems you will encounter in the editor will be fixed by right-clicking on the current directory and selecting Add/Remove CFE Nature.

Hey, thanks for those instructions BKBK. Last time I tried this I got as
far as "[furrowed brow] f***in' thing doesn't work, I don't have time for
this. Stupid product", and reverted to Eclipse 3.2. Revisiting your
instructions, I figure I probably did the "try to inatll two versions of
CFEclipse @ once" trap for young players.

I've got it working now :-)

Hi Adam,

You're not alone. I really don't know why Ganymede's developers have decided to include several versions of a plugin in one update. I haven't been able to install some updates, including updates for Ganymede itself, because I haven't been able to sus out the dependencies. Some plugins come with two dozen or so.

It means one now has to have intimate knowledge of a plugin beforehand. Didn't the Ganymede team imagine that the person installing it could be a System Admin with no knowledge of the plugin? I think the plugin-update engine requires a filter to make the installation single-click.

Thanks for mentioning the CFEclise 1.3.2.beta. I had tried several combinations of Ganymede packages and Eclipse 1.3.1.6. But could not get all the plugins to play well together with anything other than the classic package. But CFEclipse 1.3.2 beta seems to be the magic version. Even the adobe plugin works 😉
