Oracle JRE License changes and Cf Servers

Hello,

I am being asked about our JDK/JRE usage at the School District by what appears to be a legit Oracle representative.

I assumed our Cf license covers everything ... but am afraid to answer the email, can't imagine we would have to buy JRE licenses now on top of the Cf license ??

Part of his email:

I ask because the changes with Java licensing impact uses cases of Java beyond development.

For example, if you use Java Runtime (JRE) for 3rd party applications, you could be impacted by these changes depending on what versions/ updates of JRE you have installed.

Please let me know if you do have any Java instances installed on any of your desktops or servers so we can figure out if we should discuss this topic further

Thoughts ?

I checked the servers we have 2016 and 2018 .... looks like the JRE is Oracle and not OpenJDK

Thanks

Hello Larry,

There is no need to buy separate License for JRE if you have license for Coldfusion .

You need to download Java from Adobe site, we do have separate License Agreement with Oracle.

Download latest JDK from below link under "Additional Third party Installers"

https://helpx.adobe.com/coldfusion/kb/coldfusion-downloads.html#third_party

Thanks

Ravi

Ravi, could you guys PLEASE create a doc page or technote that clarifies this? All we have besides replies like this is a single blog post 4 years ago from former CF PM Rakshith Naresh.

Folks facing questions like Larry had should be able to point to something more authoratative than that or forum comments.

It would help also if it would clarify why the constant assertion to download only from Adobe, when the files you offer there are binary identical to those from Oracle. Granted, it's NICE that you offer those, so people need not login to oracle's site. But if they can and do, why should they NOT? This has never been clarified, that I've seen.

I might be able to answer that last question. When you download the JDK from Adobe, you won't be questioned about it from Oracle license enforcement people. It might not be a big problem for individuals like you or me, but if you're in a big organization it might be a different matter.
