Running CF Developer edition on a Netbook

Guest

Hi,

I am thinking about purchasing a netbook, and I am wondering if the CF Developer edition would run on it.  I looked at the CF9 system requirements and among others it asks for Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processors.  So it doesn't look like it will work on something like Intel Atom.   Does anyone have any experience running CF on a netbook?  Thanks!

Ah, sorry, meant to confirm that.  Yes: Windows 7 Home Edition.

I think I'm the only person on the planet who prefers Vista (although I'd not try running Vista on a wee machine like that!).

I've got one of these as my "travel" laptop (where the trip might be 2-3 months long): http://www.notebooks.com/2009/05/26/hp-mini-110-netbook-introduced/

I run CF8, CF9, Apache, SQL Server 2008, CF Builder and half a dozen Firefox windows on it simultaneously, and it runs fine.

It was quite sluggish with the default 1GB of RAM, but I upped it to 2GB and it's fine.  It's not like lightning, but it's fine for working now.

I will also say that the display on it is too small for coding on for any length of time, but if one plugs ane external monitor in, it supports 1280x1024 OK, which is adequate to work on.  Plus I have plugged in a keyboard and a mouse.

Hi Adam,

Are you running Windows 7 with your netbook?

Thanks for the info.

Ok, thanks.  That's helpful.  I was quite skeptical of what a netbook can run, so it's good to hear that you can run CF and all the other stuff.  I might go with the larger 11.6 screen that HP has.

As Adam says it'll be more about RAM than anything, ColdFusion doesn't really need CPU or disk IO, but does need a decent amount of memory to run properly.

Go for a 2GB minimum and I'm sure it'll be absolutely fine.

I think coding on that tiny screen would be the most frustrating aspect.

Of course, I am blind in one eye so I am not the best judge.

A word of experience. SOME mini's are limited as to the amount of RAM. My Dell Mini 10 can only use 1 GB. The memory chips are soldered in place on the same chip as the CPU. You simply cannot add more memory. (You can thank Microsoft for that limitation, not Dell BTW)

So, make sure the machine you are looking at does not limit the RAM to such a ridiculously low maximum.

A lot of apps simply don't work on 1024x600, which is the native resolution of my netbook's screen.  The Adobe CF & CFB bug trackers, for example.

It's fine for watching videos, but tricky to work on.  I only do emergency coding on it without plugging in an external monitor.  It's a necessity for being productive, IMO.
