Is there a way to close a course upon completing and refresh
the home screen to display the update status of the courses?
Currently I have to get uses to click the x in the corner of the screen and then press F5 which is a bit annoying.

Without knowing the specificanswer to your question, I'm
guessing the answer is No.
Pressing F5 to refresh is normal behavior for Client/Server applications. When the user clicks F5, the client PC (their machine) sends a request to the server (i.e. Breeze server). Then the server responds with an updated web page.
So, it's really not Breeze which is causing this - but the Internet Explorer application as it's a client/server app.
