Extracting Connect recorded meetings?

We would like to 'pull' the recording meetings out of Connect and make them available to others as a simple file. I can see no way of pulling these recordings from our Connect server. Can it even be done?

Not yet, we're hoping for a download option in the next release of Connect - Spring 2008. The Connect product team is well aware of this feature being required by users.

Hi wsipx-mike,

We have the same problem and though there is no easy way to do this, we have established a work-around when we absolutely have to extract the information. It really only works for simple presentations. Our method doesn't capture the chat pods, etc.

Sound Recording:
We use a program called Audacity for our sound recording. It is a fairly robust open source freeware program. One of the recording options in Audacity is "What U Hear". This causes it to capture any sound that occurs on your computer. Open Audacity, set the input to What U Hear, and click Record. Play your Connect recording. Save the resulting audio file.

Now you need to lay the sound into your slides. You could do this with Acrobat Presenter plug-in for PowerPoint by importing the sound, syncing it with your slides and exporting the file.

However, we also use Adobe Captive 3, which I think gives me more control. Import the PowerPoint slides into Captivate, import the sound file, and then edit the sound in Captivate by clicking Start New Slide as the appropriate points. The result is a swf file that delivers similar content to your Connect Meeting.

If you know that you need to do this before the meeting, you can have someone write down when the slide changes occur during the meeting. After importing the slides, set each to the duration noted during the meeting. Finally, import the sound file and let Captivate use the current timing and lay the sound over multiple slides.

If you have a current Maintenance and Support agreement then the new version will be given to you as soon as it is released. If you have a licensed account this will probably come in the form of a disk to your contact listed in your Admin section of your enterprise server. If you are hosted, then it will just change when they release the new version.

We are currently evaluating Adobe Connect to replace another software we use for conducting webinars. The ability to download the recording is critical for us. Good to know it will be available in 2008, otherwise is a no go!

i am also working to resolve this by hacking if necessary. So far i have this:

a) if you go to the content item page on the breeze application part of the url will look like "admin/content/sco/info?sco-id=12239&tab-id=10100". under the breeze installation directory / content / 7 you will find a pair of directories that match the sco-id number and the tab-id number. Under the sco-id directory you will find all of the recorded pod content in the form of flv files and associated xml files. The tab-id directory appears to have meeting room structure information.

b) with my first attempt to migrate raw content from a recorded meeting, i simply took the flv / xml files under the output directory and zipped them up, and then uploaded them as sharable content. That had a very interesting effect. The shared content was actually deliverable to the client system in a correct manner. however the connect interface displayed a message "this content is being processed" for several hours, followed by a "this content is invalid" or something like that and removed the content link. So it appears that the FMS server was comfortable with that structure, but the app server was not.

Perhaps somebody could give us a clue on how to fool the app server into liking a zip file with the output content files? if i could do that, i could put this problem behind me.

other options that i am thinking about at this time include:

a) figuring out what flash app to included with the flv / xml files so that it would play like a recorded meeting.
b) figuring out what database hack i could perform to export the sco data and then merge it back into the main server along with the data files under content/7.

anyway.

i just tried the uploaded zip file to content in order to get the exact message.. it is "Your content is currently being processed. Thank you for your patience." In addition, the content is shown with the little video tape (archive) icon.

so apparently, it almost looks like an archive, but i am still missing something...

and lastly, the error message (after many hours) is "There was an error processing your recording. Please contact your Connect Enterprise administrator for assistance." But the link is still there and fully functional.

anybody from adobe who can either (a) tell me the magic to put in the zip file so it passes the validity tests or (b) how to disable the processing / error messages?

anyway

well my hope is that if i keep bumping this to the top, it might get a response...

in my quest to figure out why a zipped archive was not getting by the validity checks, i looked into the \breeze\logs\support\debug.log while i uploaded a zip file with the flv / xml files from a recorded meeting. This is with version 6sp2.

the entries below catch most of the interesting items

[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) asset-install: hosted
[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) rename 'E:\breeze\content\7\10302-1\input\next_test.zip' to 'E:\breeze\content\7\10302-1\input\archive.zip'
[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) unzip 'E:\breeze\content\7\10302-1\input\archive.zip' 'E:\breeze\content\7\10302-1\input\archive'

[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) BuildInput Archive 10302 is not indexable.
[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) calling XSLT "E:\breeze\content\7/10302-1/input/indexstream.xml" "jar:file:/E:/breeze/appserv/lib/breeze.jar!/builder/tools/webapp/telephony.xsl" "E:\breeze\content\7/10302-1/input/telephony-files.xml"...
[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) E:\breeze\content\7\10302-1\input\indexstream.xml (The system cannot find the file specified)
[10-29 11:16:09] wb-1 (d) java.io.FileNotFoundException: E:\breeze\content\7\10302-1\input\indexstream.xml (The system cannot find the file specified)

i think the key entries are centered around not finding the indexstream.xml in the expected location. It also seems interesting that the forward slash / back slashes are all over the place on the file references.

In any case, does anybody have any suggestions as to where to look next for a clue? without any direction, my next item to check was to start playing with flv2xml and see if i can get more information.

solution process

If you zip up the flv and xml files as i described above, and upload as new content, it will function but there will be some error messages displayed. This error message is since the application server cannot figure out the duration, due to the lack of start and end times in the database. So....

Create the zip file, upload it as content. stop the connect server. go in with your favorite database viewer / editor (in my case Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express). Open up the breeze database, and navigate to tables / dbo.PPS_SCOS and view the table.

Find your entry you just uploaded (should be near the bottom), and scroll to the "date begin" and "date end" fields. Put in reasonable values. commit the changes, exit and restart the connect server.

Your meeting will no longer display error messages, and it will show a valid duration and size.

Of course this is "take at your own risk" information, and i take no responsibility if it goes badly for you.

I also have the constant need to have the Connect recordins as a single file. I currently do this by using Camtasia to "record the recording". I have found that this gives me the added advantage of being able to totally edit the recording both video and audio and to produce it in several different video formats.

I also ran into this problem, and have resolved to re-recording the recorded meeting using an AVI screen capture utility. It recompresses the video into the DIVX format and runs at a burn rate of approximately 5MB per minute of recorded video.

That said, can't wait until recordings.

Ok, I can move meeting recordings from one server to another, and using the API can move the recording SCO to the destination's "recordings" tab.  I can also use the API to move all supporting/linked content to the meeting's uploaded content section.  The problem I am having now is "re-linking" that content to the recording.  So if the recording had a powerpoint document uploaded, it won't play.  It just says "Loading Content" when viewing the recording and the linked resource does not show a "Yes" in the Referenced column.  Any ideas on how to "re-link" the content?

Sam, may I ask how you were able to move the meeting recordings over to another server using the API?

We're trying to do something similar, but we want to host our recordings on a cloud service like Amazon S3.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks for reading!
