I am trying to bates number 200 documents- named 1-200 in order. When I add the files to be bates stamped, adobe sorts them 1, 10,11, 12 instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. How do I get around this???
Place 0's in front of numbers, so (assuming 200 docs) 001, 002, 003, ... 045, 046, 047, ... 106, 107, 108, etc.

Thank you for responding. Still doesn't work that way- I get 001, 0010, 0011, 0012, 0013, 0014, 0015, 0016, 0017, 0018, 0019, 002, 0020 etc... This must be a problem for other people as well- i can't believe there isn't more information about this.

too many zeros. Single digit numbers should have 2 zeros 001, double digit should have 1 zero 010, and three digit numbers should have no zeros 100. This isn't an Adobe problem, it is how the computer sees numbers and sorts them.

Okay- that works. Thank you. Unfortunately, this still means i have to go back and rename 200 files...

Well, yes. This time. But now you know, so you can name future files appropriately.

For what it is worth, see if you can automate the renaming. There are tools and regular expressions out there to help you.
My personal favorite are Bulk Rename Utility and AntRenamer. Check for ready made scripts in Powershell, Bash, Python, etc. via Google.
May be this and this link has some leads.
