I have just found that in the update box of creative clod there are two versions of Photoshop to update. This made me wonder whether I have two versions of PS so did a serach and yes I have. But not 2... 3!
I thought that installing a new version would update and delete the old one.
IS it safe to uninstal the previous versions?
you have two versions of photoshop (and yes you can uninstall either - though you probably want to uninstall the older), https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html
you have one version of lightroom which you can uninstall if unneeded, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html

The separate major versions (23 and 22) for Photoshop are updated separately. The smart money is on keeping at least two major versions, in case Adobe make a change that doesn't work for you. (For example, crashes, removes features, doesn't work with your graphics card, rearrranges stuff you don't have time to learn today...)

addendum: if you have the photography plan there are two (somewhat different) versions of lightroom (lr). you can use: lr. cc and classic.

When Creative Cloud first came on the scene, it replaced old versions with new ones automatically and EVERYBODY complained. Removal of old apps should be a user's choice, not a default setting.
Unless you tick a box to remove old versions at upgrade, Adobe CC leaves old versions alone which is as it should be. You decide what to keep and what to remove when you're ready.

In addition, Photoshop 23 will most likely be released on October 18 this year — on the first day of Adobe MAX.
If you turn off automatic installs and install manually, you will get a checkbox to keep or remove the previous versions. Many people keep one previous in case they have issues.
