Beware of Apple Big Sur beta...

Hi all,

Just a quick note of caution for anyone considering testing the latest MacOS 11.0 "Big Sur"... Initial reports suggest that the CC suite works fine, which is true, in that the apps open (PS, Illustrator etc). However, Adobe CC Libraries within those apps don't seem to be working yet. 

From my testing, no resetting, re-installing etc makes a difference.

I know that the public full release of Big Sur is not for a few months, but I expect the public beta to drop in a couple of weeks, and I want people to go into that with their eyes open.

This is a beta at this stage - It is NOT Adobe's fault if everything is not working 100% on day one.

Acrobat compatibility with the new macOS 11 Big Sur

As macOS 11 is in Beta, it is not fully supported by Acrobat DC and Acrobat Reader DC. Some workflows for the current version of Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader software may not work as expected on macOS 11.

Adobe engineering team is working with Apple to ensure full support of macOS 11 Big Sur as soon as it is released.

I am using Photoshop Elements 2020 - with the big sur public beta - and it is not working well. Entire image disappears when trying to select / erase / adjust. Reported to Apple. Hoping they will fix.

Yes, we're hoping the bugs will be fixed by Apple in time for the release. But experience shows this isn't always what happens. Unless you like to live dangerously, I suggest you hold of upgrading your live machine until the first dot release of Big Sur, if not later. Give it at least a month.

A third party vendors software not working on a beta version of macOS is nothing to do with Apple. Apple make the OS, third party vendors are responsible for making their software work, not Apple.

That's not how I see it. Often APIs are broken in a beta system, so valid apps fail. This is why reporting problems to Apple is vital.

I've no doubt that Adobe has a beta and is looking into all the issues (their bugs, Apple's bug, Apple's deliberate changes, other weirdness...) and may plan for a release. The lunatics who run Apple's OS betas in production seem to also feel an entitlement to such fixes as Adobe works on them.

Its not up to Apple to FIX IT. Dont use a beta OS if you need the machine to work flawlessly, or don't you bother reading the disclaimers? Adobe need to fix their software to work with new OS. Its called BETA for a reason!

I can confirm that Adobe Acrobat is absolutely not compatible with Big Sur it crashes every time I try to open a document. Please work faster get up to speed with compatibility on these advance releases.

I'm amazed that there are complaints about Adobe being slow to update their Apps so that they can be compatible with an OS that hasn't officially been released.
You can be 100% sure that the Adobe engineers are working to make sure everything works properly by the time Big Sur is officially released. Before then (because you loaded beta software) you really have no case for complaining to Adobe.
The whole idea behind Beta software is that it isn't ready for production. Apple didn't release a Beta version to help you — they wanted feedback on what's wrong. So your observations about Big Sur should be directed at Apple — NOT Adobe.
It is also possible that the problem with Acrobat is a Big Sur problem — in which case, once again, Adobe would be talking to Apple and trying to sort it out through collaboration.
Although it is helpful for any bugs to be posted here, it isn't reasonable to moan at Adobe (unless of course, the problems persist when Big Sur is released and Adobe don't warn clients of any potential problems).
BOTTOM LINE:
Do NOT load beta software (from any company) on a production machine and expect it to work. Before downloading you would have signed an agreement to this effect. The problem is with the user — not the software vendor.

Yeah Im sure Adobe will jump at your suggestion. As Steve has stated below, you should neither expect it to work in a beta environment or feel the need to moan about it, don't you read T&C's before commiting what is clearly your main pc to running a beta OS??

Hey, advance releases are  only there for you to find out what crashes. So, job done, be happy! And don't expect anything at all on advance releases

Be sure to report any issues you encounter to Apple through their beta release channels

It's shameful that such a large corporation as Adobe is incapable of supporting their most widely used product. It reflects poorly on your brand, your customer's trust and, most importantly for your ability to make people like me commit to continuing to paying for your software.

How can you look at your customers with a straight face and tell them your software is not supported on a major operation system?

Maybe you need better engineers? Or better managers? Or is it your support staff that is incompotent and didn't advise you to start working on supporting big sur before it was released?

Whatever it is, you should prioritize it.

INCORRECT. "Big sur has been release publicly, it is no longer in beta. " This is simply not true. As of today, 20 September 2020, it is not yet released. There is a public beta which Apple call a "Preview". A Preview is not a release, it is still a beta, and it is still something only a fool would install on a live machine, leaving themselves unable to do important work. If you do this, and have any problems, it is ENTIRELY your fault, and you can expect zero sympathy or help.

You're clearly too stupid to understand the difference between a stable and a beta release, or the fact that neither Apple or Adobe or in fact any vendor will guarantee any level of functionality in a beta environment. Maybe when you grow up you'll learn how to read!

Do we need to resort to calling people stupid.  I'm using Beta Big Sur--goodness someone has to devote some time to using it.  There are risks--Apple is pretty clear on that front.  I am also a dedicated Adobe user--so Acrobat is not working--In Design is fine, Photoshop is fine.  It's a shame about Acrobat but there are some work arounds until it works.  I think it's perfectly legit to bring the topic up here--either Apple fixes it or Adobe fixes it or they do it together.  We don't need to resort to demeaning people.

"Do we need to resort to calling people stupid. " It is sad that it comes to this, but the incredible posts we see sometimes drive me to it. I know it never does any good. Downloading it, testing apps, reporting problems and wondering if anyone knows a workaround are all good. However, what we see all too often is demanding fixes, saying Adobe have let them down, saying Adobe are responsible because they can't do their work, demanding Adobe sack their programmers and get competent ones... this does rather push beyond endurance.

And for people in that position, a strong shock, indicating that people really do think they have done something incredibly stupid (even sensible people may do stupid things) might just save them from doing the very same thing next year. Focussing on saying the action is stupid rather than the person would certainly be better.

Hardly demeaning someone by calling them stupid when they clearly are. How obvious does it need to be made to people that BETA is not production, release or whatever you want to call it.

They dont read the documentation, then come on a forum and decry both companies for being bad at their job, even calling for engineers to be sacked. Its NOT perfectly legit to ask or make a post about something which is bound to happen and they should have been aware of before running a BETA version of anything on their main machine. What is perfectly legit is someone stating the issue, having reported it to both Apple and Adobe, and then asking if anyone else has experienced it and have figured out a work around, not like Mira0101 above!!
