programs losing their destination to save

I'm working on various files in Illustrator and Photoshop and repeatedly when I hit save, it has lost the ability to find the document. I want to save them to my dropbox folders, I don't need to use the cloud. I'm guessing that it is doing an auto-save to that? Not sure as I'm not finding the files in the cloud either. This just started happening within the last couple weeks

Are you using the latest release of Photoshop?

• The current version is Photoshop 2021 (version 22.1.0)

I just updated, was that a fix for that? I had been one version behind
