Problem with Adobe Digital Edge (UK Student Competition) & Request for improvements

Hey guys,

I would've prefered to speak to an Adobe rep in private regarding this issue but at the moment, there are no options for me to do this.

The Adobe Digital Edge competition is a fantastic opportunity for UK students to show off their work, explore and learn new skills, and potentially win a cash prize valued at a year's worth of tuition at university in the UK.

I've been working on a project for a while which is a small part of a role development assignment for my course as well as for my univeristy's film society. It was the brand identity and motion graphics of the society's film festival and it's awards presentation film that was livestreamed earlier this month. I'm incredibly proud that I've been able to pull this off and thought that the Adobe Digital Edge competition would be a great place to submit my work as this particular project largely involved many different Creative Cloud apps like Premiere Pro for the awards event edit, trailers and social media teasers, After Effects for the motion graphics and VFX shots, and Photoshop & Illustrator for the brand elements and static social media posts.

The issue is that I'm a film student... This immediately makes me ineligible to enter because it falls under the umbrella of "creative" courses. My project (a corporate/brand project), while making part of my assignment, doesn't exactly follow what we're taught through the course (e.g. narrative films and commercials) and is more of a utilisation of my A/V and graphic design skills for a corporate/brand-focused project rather than a film-focused one, which is why I thought this project would be perfect for the competition. Also, Adobe Creative Cloud, while offered by my uni and workshops are optional, isn't taught as a requirement of my course as we're taught to work with the Avid workflow as that's currently industry standard.

Students of creative courses have been excluded from this competition because they supposedly have an unfair advantage over students of other courses as it is assumed that these courses teach Adobe Creative Cloud software as part of the course. In my case, this isn't true, both because of the nature of my project in relation to my course content and the fact that my specialism (directing) does not require me to learn editing or motion graphics/graphic design. This is incredibly frustraiting to me because the skills I've used to create this brand identity, the subsequent marketing materials and the final awards event film were not aquired through my course, but through my years learning as a budding graphic designer. I feel like I'm missing out on this opportunity just because I decided to better myself as a creative person.

I completely understand the intent of excluding creative courses as a means of levelling the playing field but this particular prize pool is something which isn't offered much by companies like Adobe – the fact that the winner gets £9,250 and the runner-ups get £1,000 in cash to spend on whatever they want is a fantastic opportunity, especially given the circumstances creative freelancers are currently put in, but those students in creative courses are excluded. And I get that there are "other opportunities" with financial insentives but those prizes have conditions (e.g. grant funding tied to a particular project). I for one would love to enter this competition and if my project was good enough to win, I would love to splash out on some new equipment, pay of some student debt, or even save and invest. This is the only student competition that I've seen which has cash prizes without conditions but I cannot take advantage of this opportunity.

The clause in Adobe's T&Cs for this competition states that Adobe reserves the right to modify this promotion. I would like to request that Adobe opens up this competition to UK students of all courses and instead takes into account the course in which a particular contestant is enrolled in during the judging process. That way, creative students aren't just excluded in a blanket ban but their skills gained through their course is factored in. Alternatively, a similar competition with the same prize pool should be held for UK uni students enrolled in creative courses. That way, students attending a creative course has the same opportunity to win but are within their own league.

I'm looking forward to hearing back from an Adobe rep regarding this issue. Even better if some kind of progress can be made moving forward.

Cheers,

Chris

these are user-to-user forums. i think it's highly unlikely you'd get a response, but maybe next time, if you make a request here https://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

@C4Fernandez,

I don't know anything about it.  You should reach out directly to whoever is running the competition(s).  I know from past competitions, 3rd party companies are often tasked with the oversight.
