ADE stops working

I had ADE 2 for a long time and suddenly it stops working when my reader is plugged in ... whether my old sony 600 or any other reader.  I removed ADE2 and downloaded ADE 3.  Same problem.  If I open the program without the reader plugged in all is fine.  When I plug in the reader it acknowledges it, the screen goes grey and the program stops working.
