Since some time my ADE 4.5 will not open. It appears on the taskbar, and putting my cursor on it I get a picture of it as it it should look if fully opened, but when clicking on it nothing happens; the program does not come up on the screen. Since several months back I am running Windows 10 and have installed all offered updates, but I don't think that is what is causing the problem, which has only started recently. Or could it perhaps have been caused by a recent Windows 10 update?
You can try this:
1) Right click on the Icon and run as admin.
2) Rename the My Digital Edition Folder under your Documents in My Digital Edition.old and start again.
3) Uninstall the current Version and install 3.0: http://www.adobe.com/support/digitaleditions/downloads.html

Does anyone have the installation for Digital Editions 4.5? That version worked. The updates do not work at all and version 3 shows authorized to one of my accounts, but then goves and error for authorization, so does not weork. I have cleared all data I can find for ADE 3 and deleted all keys from the registry, but no change. 2 does not work either. It was the update to 4.51 or 4.511 thqt ruined everything. I cannot open any library books. It does not even open the acsm file. HEeeeeelp! Adobe only offers me a link to 4.511.

After trying the other suggestions, I was beginning to think I had to abandon the app --- thank-you, this totally worked. Instead of restore, I clicked maximize.

This is so helpful. Restore didn't work but Maximize did. After I had renamed the file in Documents and renamed even the Manifest in the 'My digital editions' .

I convert mine with epubor to acrobat format. I do not sell them or give them away nor do I use them without citations in my own work, so may not be strictly legal but is not immoraal. Also guys, make sure your ADE installs in the regular programs folder not the z86. You can do that as it installs by just chaning the location. It works so far on all my machines.

Funnily enough I have been have a problem with ade being slower and slower to open until today when it wouldn't open at all. When I tried to contact Adobe (a pain in itself!) I was asked to change my password, which I did. ADE then started opening again!

Run as an administrator does not work for me. It does not open. Just a kind of oversized icon that does not do anything. I track it on Task Manager and its CPU usage drops to 0. Then I shut it down and fume some more. I have also renamed it in the Program Folder. No difference. It is the 4.5.11 and this happened after some Windows 10 updates last month. Gary B at Microsoft says it is Adobe drivers. He gave a link to Adobe to reauthorize. From what I gather you have to have an open program to use those directions. I think it is the Windows update.

I have tried all the suggestions and ADE 4.5.11 will not start. Clicking the shortcut and going to the source directory get the same result. It is doing something since the blue circle shows for a second. If I delete the MyDigitalEditions folder and try to start ADE a new empty copy of the folder appears but that is all that happens. The windows event log shows several error event ID 1000, about one per attempt to start ADE. Each of these also has a event ID 1026 with the same timestamp indicating the .NET framework had an unhandled exception parsing a string.

Hi there,,
I am afraid I am not qualified to do more than the basics, all I can say is that changing my password helped. It starts to open, does take a minute to load the library then all is well. (I do have several hundred books in the library though!)
Sorry I have no other suggestion to make. Try changing your password and see what happens.
Good luck

Thanks. I got no help from Adobe. The trace logs in windows clearly indicate that ADE 4.5.211 is crashing due to an unhandled fault.
I ended up uninstalling 4.5 and installed 3.0 then everything worked fine.

Hi Wilf, funnily enough after all this time my ADE (4.5.11) started on a not opening/slow loading p the library issue. I went to the My Digital Editions folder, opened it and left it opened, then tried to open the app and it worked fine. That was this morning and it is still working ok without having to open the folder first. Go figure!
However, if 3.0 works for you it is perhaps best to stick with that! Although you might find that having uninstalled 4.5.11 a new install might work ok.

Hi,
I've renamed My Digital Editions folder, removed Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) 4.5.8 and installed version 4.5.11 and nothing works. ADE won't start and it is not started in a minimized window either as someone suggested. Finally I installed ADE version 3.0, but when I try to add the books I had in version 4.5.8, I'm getting the error message: "Document is licensed for a different user account." The book is though added to the library but with a "standard" icon and author "unknown". When I try to open the book I just added I'm not able to read the book and I'm getting the error message: "Activation Server Error. code: E_ADEPT_INTERNAL Digital Editions encountered an error on the activation server." When I check the "Authorisation Information" under "Help", I see that the computer is already authorised and that the email which is shown is the same as I use to logon to my Adobe account. I've been in touch with Adobe support, but they have no support on ADE.
I would appreciate some help a lot.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned already, but in my case it appeared in task bar and task manager - but would not open. I held down Ctrl-Shift and right clicked on task bar icon, that gave me the option to Maximise it.

This worked for me, Ctrl-shift right click and maximize. Genius! Thanks!

All I did to get my ADE working again after the last Windows 10 update was rename the Manifest file in the My Digital Editions folder as oldManifest and restart ADE.

I found a stupid easy fix by mistake! Do not plug your digital reader (nook in my case) until Digital Editions has opened. I have tried all the other solutions here and they did not work for me.
Wish it would just work!!

None of these worked for me except this...
1. Find the Adobe folder on your computer (open file location)
2. Delete the entire folder and its contents
3. Go to recycle bin and delete the files from there as well
4. Download & reinstall Adobe

I was having the same issue. I tried everything nothing worked. What I ended up doing was hovering over the tab and then right clicking on the small preview window that shows up directly above it, and then clicking "maximize window". This opened it right away. I have to do this everytime but it works nonetheless. Hopes this helps someone!

I have faced similar issue after a windows update, later this steps solved my problem.
Step 1: Delete the "My Digital Editions" folder or rename it to "My Digital Editions.old", delete would be better
Step 2: Go to this location : "C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Adobe_Systems_Incorporate"
Step 3: Delete the folder "DigitalEditions.exe" something looks like this:"DigitalEditions.exe_Url_qyaa14c3q2kp5ltfvp1pdpdu"
Step 4: Run the Application again with administrator,(hold shift + right click on app)
Problem Solved!
