There are other threads on this topic suggesting you de-authorize and authorize anew your computer.

I cannot even de-authorize my computer; I get the E_AUTH_NOT_READY error.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ADE 4.0 to no avail

Extremely frustrated.

Please try out the below solution.

Mac:

    1. Deauthorize ADE. To do so, navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to trash.
    2. Authorize ADE again.

Windows:

    1. Click Start > Run.
    2. Type regedit and then press Enter. The Registry Editor opens.
    3. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adept
    4. Right-click the Adept key and click Delete.
    5. In the Confirm Key Delete dialog box, click OK. ADE is deauthorized now.
    6. Authorize ADE again.

Hope this solves your problem

It is really frustrating: I spent now an hour to find out how to access the chat-support and thta it simply does not work when you use Firefox 😞

Seems to work technically now by using IE, but nobody is answering.

I will never ever buy any books again that a licenced by for digital-editions. This feels like someone is "robbing" the content you payed good mony for.

If due to some reason, you are unable to deauthorize ADE, follow the below steps:

Mac: Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash.

ADE will be deauthorized now.

Now Authorize ADE again.

Windows:

Choose Start > Run.

In the Open text box, type regedit and then press Enter. The Registry Editor opens.

In the left pane of the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adept

Right-click the Adept key and choose Delete.

In the Confirm Key Delete dialog, click OK.

Your authorization will be deleted.

ADE will be deauthorized now.

Now Authorize ADE again.

I also have problems with "authtorization can not be deleted, please try later". I tried to do as suggested above but I have no folder "Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions" and no file activation.dat on my computer (a Mac). What to do?

OK, I have found the folder Library/Application Support/Adobe. It contains numerous folders about other Adobe applications on the Mac but no folder named "Digital Editions". And when I search the entire computer there is no "activation.dat" file anywhere. I have tried to remove ADI and reinstall it but that did not help. What to do next - any help is appreciated.
