What does it mean for there to be an "activation server error"?

Following instructions for days on how to activate my Nook Color to receive transfer of books from ADE.  When trying to activate, a message appears: " activation server error"....in red!  Can no longer read from the Sony eReader because the screen has turned gray over time.  The books can be moved but cannot be opened until there is "user activation".
