Often the Error its a problem with the File itself. Have you try to Download? If not work should check the File over the Reseller of the eBook.

Similarly to the handful of others getting E_ADEPT_OPEN_DOCUMENT_ERROR on Windows 10 and ADE; However, this was only on large pdfs (>350MB) when being delivered via .acsm.  Smaller pdf and epubs download fine, whereas the larger ones get anywhere from about 10% to 60% before stalling and giving the error.

Trying to download with ADE 2, 3, and 4, and running each as Administrator didn't help.  In hopes of helping someone else (as nothing apart from ADE appears able to deal with .acsm pdf), what seems to have done the trick was navigating to the ADE shortcut, right clicking it and selecting properties.  From there selecting the "Compatibility" tab, and switching on "Compatibility mode" with "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7".  Once in this mode, pdfs seemed to download without problem.

For me this problem occurs with just one particular ePub.  All other ePubs can be downloaded and displayed properly by ADE 4.5.

TLDR; version: you will get this error for a particular ePub if the ePub stored on the OverDrive server is corrupted.

Detail of my attempts:

I've run into this problem today.  I tried removing the authorization and re-authorizing ADE.  I tried ADE 2.0 & 3.0.  I tried a different computer running Windows 7.  None worked.

Hoping that maybe this is a bug in ADE triggered by this particular ePub, I made a final, desperate attempt. I installed the OverDrive app on Android and downloaded the same ePub.  This time the ePub is downloaded but when I tried to read it I got this clear error from the app:

"overdrive error retrieving epub chapter count end of central directory signature not found error code 3006"

"central directory signature not found" is a familiar error when one tries to unzip a partially downloaded or corrupt zip file (ePubs are basically zip files).  So this tell me that the file stored on the OverDrive server is corrupt.

Just to be sure, I transferred the ePub from Android and Windows and sure enough, I get this error when I try to unzip the epub:

End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.

So the only way is to contact the library and ask them to tell OverDrive to fix the file

One more thing.

The error from ADE is so misleading: "Unabled to download. Error getting license. License Server Communication Problem: E_ADEPT_DOCUMENT_OPEN_ERROR"

Make it seem like a licensng/authorization issue when in fact the file on the server is corrupted.
