Dimension will be removing the block on our RAM and VRAM system requirements in our next release and will instead just warn you that you're below minimum.  We are constantly working on performance and allowing our application to be used by a wider range of hardware and system configurations.

There are many alternatives out there, it really depends on what you want.

  • Adobe Products:
    • Photoshop
  • Rendering Software:
    • Keyshot
    • Maxwell
    • Arnold
  • 3D "Suites":
    • Cinema 4D
    • 3ds Max
    • Maya
    • Blender (Free)

Here are my unbiased thoughts as a user:

  • Photoshop is actually a really great option.  It has almost all the features Dimension has today, just sort of tucked away.  You need to know how to find them (which is part of why we are building 3D out into it's own tool).
  • The biggest tradeoff with other non-Adobe apps is the cost, complexity, and features.
    • Most other apps are going to be significantly more complex and require a bit more 3D knowledge or time investment in training.  Dimension was specifically built for Adobe users so we have more familiar UI, tools, shortcuts, etc.
    • Most other apps will be more mature and have more features compared to Dimension.  Dimension is young so we're still building out our workflows.
    • Most are fairly expensive (A few hundred dollars to a few thousand, depending on license).  Blender is a free modeling software but again it's much more complex and will require some more time investment to learn.
