If you are trying to enter any letters, then you have a redemption code and not a serial number. If this is the case, the serial number will be registered to the account you used to originally redeem the code. A redemption code may be used only once to obtain a serial number.
Check your account for the serial number and the correct download file:

there are 3 ways to find/recover an adobe serial number.
1. search purchased materials: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/find-serial-number.html
2. you can check your account (if you purchased from or registered with adobe AND you remember the adobe id used to purchase/register), https://accounts.adobe.com
3. if your adobe program is installed on another computer you can recover its serial number from that computer,

You are correct, PJBlackmoore. The code was turned into a serial number a long time ago. Please see our previous posts on how you can regain access to the account you used to redeem the code.
Once you are logged in under the correct account, you can use the steps listed in https://adobe.ly/4i4lpTX to download the installation files. ^JW

This information will be useful once you regain access to the account with the software titled registered and are able to download the installation files to your computer successfully.

When & where did you obtain CS6 and the redemption code?
I ask because it hasn't been sold legally since early 2017, when Adobe discontinued Creative Suite.
