I had a new hard drive put in my iMac running OS 10.11.6 El Capitan. Now when I download and try to reinstall CS-6 it fails and tells me I have an invalid or expired serial number.

Where did you obtain your copy of CS6?
Did you buy it directly from Adobe or a 3rd party vendor?
If you bought it directly from Adobe, your serial number should be registered online and accessible from your online account.

did Adobe get rid of CS6?
=========
Yes. CS6 has not been legally sold or supported for 6 years. When did you buy it and from whom?
=============
Beware of fake Adobe reps who may contact you privately offering to sell you software or take control of your computer. It's a scam, run away! Real Adobe employees will never reach out via Outlook, Yahoo, Gmail or Skype.

You purchased it online from WHOM?
Some 3rd parties sold drastically reduced illegal versions that can't be re-installed.

There is one more thing you can try.
1. Use the Adobe Cleaner tool below to remove ALL Adobe apps from your system.

2. Restart your computer.
3. Reinstall CS6 from the disks or downloads that you received at purchase.
Hope that helps.

Catalina is a no go. It's 64-bit only.
You will need to revert to Mojave or earlier. And use the workaround below. Legacy CS installers are not compatible with Mac Sierra, High Sierra or Mojave.

If you did not DE-activate the serial number you MAY have a problem with the number of activations
When you can't deactivate a serial number (this is the ONLY support Adobe still offers for CS5/CS6)
BE SURE TO ONLY ASK FOR ACTIVATION SUPPORT TO ADJUST YOUR ACTIVATION COUNT
You may need to PERSIST or TRY AGAIN to find a support agent with more experience
Be sure to remain signed in with your Adobe ID before accessing the link
Do be aware that Adobe's staffing is impacted by the virus, so wait times are long
-make sure that your browser does NOT block ads, scripts, or pop-ups
-you must also allow 'cookies' in your web browser for the link to work

Type "Agent" in the chat box to bypass the chatbot and be connected to a person

Too many activations is not the same error as invalid or expired license.
