Does InDesign CS6 overwrite older versions?

For various reasons (Mac OSX 10.8)I run InDesign CS4 and CS5.5 separately. I would like to test CS6 for an upcoming job – but had an Adobe "chat" who told me If I purchased – it would right over my other programs (deleting them). Is this true?
