I have an external Samsung x5 from where I run LR and PS. In the Creative Cloud preferences I have set the install location to /Volumes/Samsung_X5/applications and first-time installation works fine from the Creative Cloud application. But every time there are an update it installs under the /volumes/Preboot/Applications.
This is a bit frustrating, any one that knows how to avoid this?
installing on an external drive is not supported. to prevent your problems, don't install in an unsupported drive.

However... I don't think installing to an external drive will ever be supported, since disconnecting that external drive breaks the registration entries
Move data files to the external drive to make room, and install to an internal drive

The reason for using an external drive is that today extern Thunderbolt 3 NVMe SSD disks are available. They are mind-blowing fast, almost as fast and the internal Samsung OEM NVMe disk that Apple is using as part of the fusion drive in the iMac’s. So using an external NVMe disk is for speed not space and OSx do not really care where you install your applications. It has a register file keeping track of application data, but as long that you do not hot-plug/un-plug the disk OSx do not care.

I suppose that is why external drives are not supported. It could be supported, but I doubt that the culprit here is Adobe. The OS does not seam to support it! The OS is not under the responsibility of Adobe.
Only if Apple states that external drives are supported for installing software on external disks and if the potential problems are transparently handled by the OS, only then should Adobe consider this option.

OSx supports running application form an external drive just fine. The Creative Cloud also support setting the application location to /Volumes/<my external drive>/Applications in the preference menu and it installs Ps or Lr without a problem on the external drive the first time you install the programs. The problem is when there is an update to Lr or Ps then the Creative Cloud application installs the full program over again on the internal drive even that the location is set to the external drive.
