not recognizing an ai file

I have two files that were created a couple of days ago.  I am trying to open them and it saying they cannot recognize the files as AI files.

1. What is the file extension?

2, Are you saying you cannot open the files directly in Illustrator from File > Open?

3. Or are you asking how to associate .ai files with the Illustrator app?  That depends on which operating system you have.
