For designing apparel (shirts, sweaters, pants, jackets etc.), is it better to use photoshop or illustrator? or both?

I understand it is probably better to use illustrator for creating logos or t-shirt designs, but which program is best to use for Designing patterns like a striped t-shirt or camouflage?
