have been one CC for over a year, updated Lightroom cc Classic will not launch with Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6. Double click icon, LR tries to launch but returns to Finder screen.
reset your preferences - https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

Thank you for your suggestion, unfortunately resetting prefs did not work. I double click the LR Classic icon to launch but within 1 second the screen returns to the Finder. I have reinstalled the system with Command R, reinstalled the icon on the dock and made sure all catalog related files in the Library/Pictures/Lightroom are clean and up to date. Still no launch.

did you install the cc desktop app from here https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud and use it to install your adobe lr?
if yes:
uninstall lr including preferences, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html
restart your computer (don't skip this)
use the desktop app to re-install your lr
if no, repost.

Still no luck. LR CC Classic still does not launch after repeated uninstalls/reinstalls from the desktop CC app (with restarts), system reinstalls, preference removals (com.adobe.LightroomClassicCC7.plist), Disk Utility scans, nothing seems to work. I'm using MacBook Pro Retina 13" late 2012 build with High Sierra 10.13.6. I'm beginning to wonder if my computer is out of date. Very frustrating.

using a browser that allows popups and cookies, contact adobe support during pst business hours by clicking here and, when available, click 'chat', http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/service-ccm.html
if you want to try a last fix yourself before contacting adobe, you could do a clean install:
uninstall everything cc including preferences, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-remove-app.html
then uninstall the cc desktop app, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/uninstall-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html
clean your computer of cc files per http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
restart your computer (don't skip this)
reinstall the cc desktop app, https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud.
if you're unable to install the cc desktop app at this stage, use an administrator account (solution 4 here, https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-missing-damaged.html)
use the desktop app to install your cc programs/trials

A note of thanks for your thoughtful recommendations, sorry for the long gap in reply. I could not solve the problem no matter what i tried so I decided the machine itself (2012) was failing. I bought a new MacBook Pro and Lightroom works like a charm again.
Many thanks
