Is it possible to download and run software off an external SSD harddrive or would I have to purchase another Macbook Pro with more storage?

I moved your post over from the poorly named "Using the Community" forum, which is for getting help using this forum system, to a better forum.

I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

AFAIK it is not possible to install programs to an External HDD and Especially on a Mac computer.

But that does not mean you can't Move User Files off the internal HDD/SSD to an external drive to free up space on the internal drive.

No need to buy a new Mac with more storage space if you can move other files off the internal drive to an external drive.
