When you lease an apartment for one year and want to move out early, you pay a fee

When you lease a car for one year and want out early, you pay a fee

When you 'click to agree' to the subscription terms while buying a subscription, that means that you really do need to read BEFORE you buy a subscription... https://www.adobe.com/misc/subscription_terms.html

You agreed to pay for a year, even if you have monthly payments instead of one annual payment, so leaving early has a fee

Only the Annual Plans have an early cancellation fee (50% of unpaid balance).

If you don't need continuing access to software, buy the monthly plan, cancel anytime.

There is well an option for single app plan. But you currently have a CC all app plan that you wish to cancel before the term. You may do that by paying 50% of the remaining dues of your current term, which is what you aggreed to when you took the yearly subscription instead of the monthly.

Did you have a special promotion? Did you have a student subscription and failed to submit your student affiliation?

There is no other reason for such an increase. Since the start of the subscription model, there was as of my knowledge only one price increase. And generally as of my experience of 20+years user (for sure since Photoshop 4...not CS4), Adobe products where never so affordable than today.

John's answer, however creative, is completely wrong.

When you are renting an appartment, you pay a termination fee because they lose money because they have to find another tenant.

When you are renting a car, you pay a termination fee because they lose money because they need to find another person willing to lease.

In the case of Adobe, they don't lose any money because of it because they aren't providing a service which actually costs them much money at all.

If you purchase an annual plan from a mobile phone service provider, you pay termination fees if you cancel that contract early.

In all those cases, and in Adobe's case, you agreed to a contract for a year, which means you agreed to pay them a certain amount of money over the course of the year. In return, you get a lower monthly cost. Termination fees cover some of the loss of revenue that you agreed to pay.

Your contention that it doesn't cost Adobe much money to provide the service is incorrect. It costs them millions of dollars to provide this software because they have to pay the people who develop it, they have to pay the people who provide support, they have to pay the people who manage projects, they have to pay the people who keep the company running, they have to pay for infrastructure such as servers, web sites and their development, rental or mortgages on office space, equipment acquisition, healthcare and on and on and on and on.

There are 3 plan options.  Choose the best one for your situation.

Annual, paid monthly.  A 12 month commitment during which your price is guaranteed not to go up. Cancelling early incurs a 50% penalty fee.

Annual, prepaid.  A 12 month commitment. Cancelling early incurs a 50% penalty fee.

Month-To-Month. No commitment, cancel anytime.  Price is not guaranteed and could increase at any time.
